That was one of the best chicken sandwiches I’ve ever had. It was seasoned so beautifully. The Mac and cheese and corn bread were also top-notch! I’m definitely coming back soon.

Had a great time with my wife at Brenda’s for brunch! I love their biscuits and gravy really really good and the ex Benedict was amazing as well too. Definitely would recommend a little bit pricey but that’s just the Bay Area.

Go to Brenda’s for an absolute feast! Brenda’s is legendary for a reason, and we definitely hit the high notes of their menu, indulgent, and soul-food energy.
If you’re looking for a brunch that feels like a warm hug (followed by a very necessary nap), Brenda’s French Soul Food is the gold standard. Our recent spread was a deep dive into the best of New Orleans-inspired comfort, and it did not disappoint.
We had a sweet start and you can’t go to Brenda’s and skip the beignets. We opted for the flight, but the Apple Beignets stole the show. Imagine a pillowy, golden-fried dough stuffed with a warm, spiced apple compote—it’s essentially a handheld autumn dream.
For brunch we tried,
* The Hangtown Fry: A classic California-Gold-Rush-meets-Bayou dish. The crispy oysters paired with eggs and bacon create a salty, briny richness that is surprisingly balanced.
* Fried Chicken Benedict: The chicken was perfectly seasoned with a crunch that stands up to the hollandaise. It’s decadent, heavy in the best way, and everything a Benedict should be.
* Catfish and Grits: A southern staple done right. The catfish was flaky and golden, but let’s talk about the real MVP: the grits.
> Pro Tip: Whatever you order, make sure there are grits on the table. They are creamy, buttery, and arguably the best in the city. They aren’t just a side; they’re a “must-have” experience.
Brenda’s continues to prove that soul food isn’t just about the calories—it’s about the craft. Between the sweet crunch of the apple beignets and those life-changing grits, this is a brunch worth every bit of the inevitable wait time!

Came here on a ‘Tuesday at 9 am. Our female waiter was so nice! The chicken was moist with a wonderful exterior crunch! The biscuits are to die for – a buttery moist perfectly dense and flaky interior, and the crust was perfectly browned. The jambalaya is flavored perfectly with no one ingredient overpowering the dish. It also has ample, well seasoned chicken and the rice is not soggy nor mushy. It was beautiful? The eggs and ham Benedict was lovely which was over a biscuit and the poached eggs were perfect. The hollandaise sauce was absolutely yummy and the right consistency 🙂 The cappuccino was a joy cause I was still flying from the caffeine for some time! Oh, the jam spread that came with the biscuits was delicious too.

Let me start with the positives. The gumbo was good, the fried oysters were prepared perfectly. Now the bad, the beignets were completely wrong and tasted like the oil they were fried in. I’ve been to Louisiana dozens of times and have had beignets every time. These were not beignets, they were dense and heavy. The biggest disappointment was they were a buy one get one free. I threw them out.

I grew up in Oakland and have been eating here since they opened. This is our family’s favorite Oakland restaurant. Whenever I visit, I have to have the beignets and mac and cheese from Brenda’s.

I had an absolutely magical meal ✨️ at Brenda’s French Soul Food in Oakland. I ordered the Grillades and Grits with a Cinnamon Toast Latte. I must say the food was superb! The beef from the Grillades melted in my mouth, the grits were an amazing consistency and so flavorful, the biscuit light as air and the the scrambled eggs fluffy and served with the perfect amount of fresh green onions on top. My latte definitely lived up the hype, being not too sweet or bitter with a creamy froth and a dash of cinnamon. The service was swift and phenomenal! The meal set me back about $30 + tip and was worth every penny!

How this place has got really good ratings is beyond me, good service, nice people but this food is overrated and way too expensive. 160 for 3 of us gumbo was average not much flavour, the one meat and three side was okay the sausage, beans and rice had little to no flavour, zero seasoning on the sausage or rice super plain, chicken gumbo as a side was bland barely any taste to it. Catfish was cooked well liked the batter but same thing dull, collard greens were also flavourless and the broth or water they was in was also flavour less . The mac and cheese is definitely not homemade, tastes exactly like the Costco one wouldn’t be surprised if it was. Overall good hospitality but bland food, anyone who thinks it’s amazing needs to go out of state or America and eat some nice food not worth the hype expensive and dull. None of my family even finished half the plate so disappointing plus for three of us it was nearly 200 dollars 160 and 20 percent tip. Go to a cheap fried chicken restaurant save yourself some money.

Service was great food was good, we had Shrimp Po boys and red beans and rice. The food was ok a little greasy, they give you a decent amount of shrimp compared to a lot of places. Once I added a little hot sauce to the red beans and rice I would definitely order it again. Loved the service made us feel very welcomed and checked on us often.
