The breakwater burger put them on the list. So we had to try it. It was really good. We also tried the brisket banh mi & brisket melt. Banh mi was alright, the brisket melt had good flavor but the brisket itself was bit dry for my liking, I think because the it was a lean cut & it was seared. Next time I’ll order the brisket pit sando instead. The fries are amazing though. It’s like hot & fresh McDonald’s fries but with their own seasoning. Don’t skip the fries you’ll regret it.
we arrived at 12:05p (they open at noon) and there was about 30 ahead of us. We left around 2pm and the line had died down.
The brisket is pretty dang good. Juicy and flavorful with that yummy crust on it. Of all the bbq places in a 50 mile radius, this one is up there in taste and quality. Thumbs up on the chunky potato salad, cheesy mac, and chili sides. The sauces are unique too. I think one of them was carrot based?
Every dish we ordered was delicious. The ribs were smoky and tender, the pulled pork sandwich perfectly balanced between richness and spice, and the sides held their own: soft, buttery cornbread, creamy mac and cheese, and a generous slice of sheet cake to finish.
We also loved the low-key setup. You order at the counter, seat yourself, and bus your own table. But the staff is still helpful (they helped us track down high chairs).
Overall, breakwater isn’t fancy, but it doesn’t need to be. It’s comfortable, delicious, and deeply California.
Cornbread was messed up and undercooked from another meal. Mac n cheese was good.
Ribs and Brisket could’ve been better.
Barbecue sauce at the table felt watered down.
The brisket was dense, had a nice bark, and was tasty, but didn’t achieve the tenderness of excellent brisket. I wanted to love it but could only like it. Don’t get me wrong, I’d eat there if I was going to be on that side of the peninsula, but I wouldn’t go there for that alone.
