These guys were smart to name it “Brawley BBQ and Yakitori”. Well half smart, actually. “Brawley BBQ”, if they named it in any way related to Hawaiian style plate lunch they would have failed miserably. Their menu items are basically Hawaiian plate lunch; Mac salad, rice and an entree item, like chicken katsu, grilled beef, even a seafood option. They even have musubi on the menu, Spam, chicken, or beef. (It may look like a Japanese dish but it is an original Hawaiian creation.) But because they named this place ” Brawley BBQ” and nothing closely related to plate lunch they don’t get a fail.
“Yakitori” on the other hand. While, yes the four or five skewered items they offer are technically Yakitori they really are nothing to rave about. So a partial fail there.
I came here hoping to dine on some good Yakitori for lunch. You know, chicken skin, gizzard, even hearts. All cooked on a charcoal grill (konro) but was disappointed at the offerings. You put it on your sign so that’s what I was expecting. But I was delighted to find a plate lunch restaurant. Da kine I miss from da islands or San Diego. I saw they have curry katsu so I happily ordered that. Since I’ve moved to EC I’ve been making it at home so it was nice to see I don’t have to make it for once. It arrived fairly quick and looked so good. The curry was not what I expected. It was the S&B kine curry powder, but instead of using coconut cream, water was used so it wasn’t thick and creamy. In any case it’s the wrong kine curry. Please, I beg you to switch to Japanese curry. Even the cheap stuff would be better for this dish, but HOUSE brand is the best, just saying. The Mac salad, eh, macaroni, mayo, and maybe relish. Rice was good, thank you Lord Vader, the rice was good. Katsu was breaded perfectly but was quite thin. So parts were tough and chewy. The portion size is enough for sharing but if you one big husky bradah or a tiny Samoan it should be enough to fill you up. If not, the price is right so go get more grinds brah.
Would I come back here? Eh, maybe if I lived in Brawley. The experience wasn’t mind blowing enough to get me to drive from El Centro, esp. since I know I can make it at home. Would I bring my wife here? Not unless she insisted. She still brings up that time we went to an L&L in WA state over ten yrs ago.
Nitpicks
– The atmosphere is a bit lacking, might just be the size of the place though. However, it felt more like I was waiting for sonething to happen even while i was eating my food. It feels kinda empty.
– No proper door signs or logo. They have paper posted up for opening and closing times but nothing else.
– The view looking it is blicked so you can’t even see inside the restaurant from outside.
– A few extra menu items or a few more fountain selections wouldn’t hurt. Maybe offering more than just Musubi maybe add a few Sushi platters.
– The different colored walls are a little off putting but don’t catch me completely off guard.
– A few things were out of order during my visit.
Positive Points
– The food has some nice quality, nothing over or under cooked.
– I like the backdrop on the west wall it gives a nice comforting coastal feel.
– Its a nice spot to grab a quick bite before you head out of town. Good location.
– The seating is nice, and comfortable.
– They use Eco Friendly Biodegradable take out boxes instead of the Styrofoam boxes, so thats a plus for me!
