Bortell’s has been around forever, but they still have the best, freshest, tastiest fish you can find. You gotta love a fish place with a line out the door at 5:30 on a Thursday — you know that their food doesn’t sit around languishing in its tray waiting for customers and getting old. This fish is hopping out the door at a wicked pace, and the line really moves! The employees know their stuff: the service was fast and efficient. The dinner basket has 1/2 lb fish of your choice (and there are lots of choices) + crispy, delicious fries and a nice vinegar-y coleslaw. Always good. We stop every year on our annual trip (40 years!). Carry out only, so no rating for “Atmosphere” — but it’s clean and well-maintained.

Was recommended to visit here by our pastor and it did not disappoint! Huge variety of fish (fried, smoked and take home raw) for every one’s preference. Prices were a little higher than expected but the taste was worth it! Place was packed and the line was out the door and I can see why. Totally recommend trying Bortell’s

Outstanding fresh and smoked fish with a lot of choices. Fish is cooked while you wait, so it is tender, crisp, and warm. Don’t miss the homemade tartar sauce and tasty coleslaw. Worth the drive. We plan a visit every time we go to Ludington.

This place is amazing. Best fried fish I’ve had by far. We hit this on our drive up from Cincinnati to go camping. Ate it on the beach at the park the employees recommended. Day 2 we left our camp and belongings and hiked out so we could come here again. Incredibly fast, incredibly delicious. Got the smoked trout the second time and it is the best smoked fish I’ve ever had. Truly a remarkable place.

Best fish basket dinners. Especially the smelt, perch and Icelandic cod. And the Norwegian smoked salmon is the best I have ever had. If you enjoy smoked fish you must try the Norwegian smoked salmon. They have been smoking fish for over 100 years!

We arrived just after opening. There was a line out the door, but it moved quite quickly. I am not a seafood person, and normally don’t eat fish, but I wanted to try their fresh options. I got the whitefish basket and my husband got the lake perch (I think). The food was very good. The half pound was more than enough, the fries and coleslaw were good, too.

MICHIGANDERS a Must visit WOW. Fish is OUTSTANDINGLY DELICIOUS. Variety is AMAZING. Family owned. We go ever other Tuesday. Worth the drive, scenery is amazing if you go to the park to eat.

The best fresh fish you will ever have! I haven’t found another place to get fish that beats this one. There can be a long line, but it is so well organized that the line goes quick. Everything is cooked to perfection.
