Border Town in Greenpoint Is the Next Contender for NYC’s Best …
Reviews
We visited on a Sunday evening as walk-ins and were quoted about a 55-minute wait. Since the restaurant isn’t on Resy or OpenTable, that’s something to keep in mind if you plan to come during peak hours. Fortunately, there’s a bar next door where we waited until we were called.
We were seated at the bar, where bartenders Alana and Julia were friendly and welcoming, creating a relaxed and casual vibe that fits the restaurant well.
The standout dish of the night was actually the simplest one: a flour tortilla with refried beans and crumbled cheese. The tortilla itself, rolled thin and cooked with pork lard, was fantastic. It immediately reminded me of a Honduran baleada, and sometimes the most straightforward dishes are the ones that shine the most.
We also tried the special of the day, which featured stewed chicharrón. That dish was rich and flavorful and easily one of the highlights of the meal. The carne deshebrada taco (shredded beef) was solid but didn’t quite reach the same level, good, but not particularly memorable.
The Tacos de Nada were a pleasant surprise: crispy on the outside with soft potatoes inside, showcasing how simple ingredients can be elevated with the right technique and balance.
The only real issue during the meal was with service timing. Our order of Frijoles con Veneno was forgotten and ended up arriving about 30–40 minutes later than expected. That dish also only comes with three tortillas and it’s a lot of beans and meat. I think it should be maybe five tortillas minimum for that dish . During that time, there wasn’t much communication about the delay. A quick update, or even just acknowledging the mistake, would have gone a long way. It felt like a small logistical slip in an otherwise smooth operation.
That said, Border Town still delivers where it counts: great tortillas, approachable prices, and a lively, casual atmosphere. Once they tighten up the pacing and communication, the restaurant is likely to continue thriving.
I can easily see this place becoming even more popular in the summer months, especially if outdoor seating becomes part of the setup.
Overall: 4 out of 5 stars. I’d happily come back. but maybe earlier on in the day.
The host and servers were all super friendly and welcoming. Ambiance wise, very warm and nice sit down tables with a bar as well. The music was very loud, which we didn’t enjoy. I did love that they had the Spanish audiobook of Harry Potter playing in the bathroom.
The food rundown:
– guac + salsa huevona: solid guac. I really loved the kick of the salsa huevona. I wish it came with more crackers given the portion of the guac
– ensalada: honestly it was a little bland and awkward to eat because there were full leaves stacked in top of each other. Thankfully we had some guac left which we mixed into the salad.
-gringa: this was one of my favorite dishes but I can’t get over that it costs $22 for basically a single quesadilla.
– frijoles y queso taco: the biggest disappointment due to the tortilla being undercooked/raw-like.
I’d rate this place closer to 3.5 but the service is the reason I bumped it up.
Get all tacos and don’t skip the guacamole!
Hoping they’ll start doing breakfast tacos/burritos too, would def become a weekend staple for us
With that said, the menu is hard to navigate and the music is so loud, u can barely ask the waiter questions. The waiter is nice and all, but it seemed like there was little attention to detail. “Do you know what you want to eat?” How about you tell me what the taco of the day is first?
There were two older ladies next to me (greenpoint has non hipsters too!), and they were confused by the menu, and the waiter did not explain the menu well. They ended up complaining that they ordered duplicate things (the platter w the carne is essentially two main taco offerings in one).
The people bussing the plates from the kitchen to patrons were throwing them on the table. How about separating the tortilla basket from the dish when bringing it to the table instead of leaving it stacked for the patron to move around their table? How about if its multiple tacos intended for multiple people you place the plate in the center rather than on the corner in a flippant manner?
I dont know, i was hoping for better. I do think the menu layout could improve, everyone around me seemed a weeeeebit confused. The experience was more or less unsavory, ended up cutting dinner short and walked to taqueria el chato lol.
