From your choice of two outdoor decks, watch boats on the harbor while enjoying a beverage, see lobstermen bring in the daily catch, or just enjoy a sunset cocktail as you breathe in the ocean air. It’s a captivating scene that changes with every tide. That’s the charm — an excursion to Boone’s always has fresh appeal, so come often! The menu teems with native seafood like fresh Maine lobster steamed over rockweed, fried clams and wood-grilled fish, as well as steaks and chops. Then there’s Boone’s signature dish, the baked stuffed lobster. Alexander Boone invented the baked stuffed lobster when he opened Boone’s right here on the Portland Waterfront in 1898.

Country-chic 2-story seafood venue with wood-grilled entrees, a raw bar & waterfront views.

We went for dinner around 5 pm on a Friday night. We sat in the bar area on the high stool table. We had the stuffed lobster. While these dishes were quite expensive, we felt it was appropriate for our visit from the West Coast as it was a “bucket list” venture. The stuffing was fantastic with shrimp & scallops mixed in. The lobster was cooked just right and tasted delicious. The rumors of “the best lobster is a Maine lobster” proved true to us. Excellent meal. The clam chowder soup was very tasty, but lacked adequate amount of clams. Service was appropriate for that busy time.

Finished our day trip to Portland here for dinner, and it did not disappoint. Although it took awhile to get our order in, after that everything moved well. The food was great. The Steamerd Clams were massive but tender. The lobster dishes were as good as you’d expect for the coast of Maine. Definitely a good experience.

We ordered raw oysters and lobster rolls. The food was fresh, well prepared and flavorful. We sat outside on the deck with a view of the harbor on a nice sunny day. The waitperson was friendly and attentive. The drinks were good but not very strong. Food and drinks were a bit pricey but average for Portland Maine. Overall it was an awesome time.

Hosted our wedding reception at Boones and everything was perfect! Upstairs space with the patio on the water was great for 100 people. All the guests said the food was amazing, staff were attentive and friendly.

Ashely helped us a ton with planning, creating a menu, and setting up for the event.

Thanks to all the staff at Boones!

We were actually heading to the place next door but are so glad we ended up here instead.

Had a full 3 lb steamed lobster. It turned into a proper table experience and was great fun from start to finish.

The servers made a real fuss of the kids, which we appreciated. Service felt warm and engaged without being over the top.

Italian Prosecco paired perfectly with the lobster.

A really good night out. Would absolutely return.

Walk into Boone’s and you don’t travel back in time — you travel back to basics, to the kind of place that remembers what matters and doesn’t feel the need to dress it up. Opened in 1898, Boone’s carries its history the way an old wooden hull carries the memory of every wave it’s met. Darcy Smith continues the legacy with a steady hand, and it shows the moment you sit down.

Their menu reads like a list of familiar promises: Fish and Chips, Lobster Roll, Salmon BLT. They’re the dishes people return for, the ones that never seem to fall out of favor. Boone’s plays them straight, without gimmicks, and that restraint is exactly what makes the food meaningful.

The Fish and Chips arrives with an ease that comes from repetition done well. The batter is light, the portion generous, and the plate looks like something made by a kitchen confident in its craft. The fries are well-executed, but the coleslaw is what stands out — clearly made by someone who takes pride in simple things done properly.

The Salmon BLT is a quiet triumph. The herbed focaccia sets the tone immediately, making it impossible to imagine this sandwich on anything as uninspired as white bread. Every element feels considered, balanced, intentional.

The Lobster Roll looks the part and doesn’t shortchange you on quantity. But the flavor stops just shy of greatness. It’s good — undeniably good — but it feels like it’s waiting for one more note: more tarragon, a touch of lemon zest, a shake of Old Bay, or perhaps the rich comfort of Duke’s mayo. It needs something small but essential to make it stand out.

As for the 2¼-pound lobster, there’s nothing to explain. It is exactly what you think it is: pure, honest Maine lobster with lemon butter and no theatrics. You finish it full and satisfied, and the world gets quiet for a moment afterward. That’s all it needs to be.

Boone’s isn’t cheap, but lobster isn’t meant to be. Expecting otherwise is a misunderstanding of both the meal and the place. Quality costs what it costs.

The staff is attentive, the kitchen skilled, and the atmosphere carries a kind of worn-in dignity that’s increasingly rare. My only real regret is not ordering the stuffed lobster — only later did I learn Boone’s may have invented it.

And if someone claims they didn’t enjoy their meal here, well…
“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

Excellent lobster roll at a completely fair price. Great service and was pleasantly surprised to see multiple mocktail offers on the menu. The ginger beer blueberry was my favorite.

We hosted my mother’s birthday party here and truly could not have asked for a better experience. From the very beginning, Ashley, the Events & Marketing Director, was amazing to work with. She was thoughtful, collaborative, and incredibly attentive throughout the entire planning process.

We had a fabulous tasting in advance, and the attention to detail and genuinely client-focused approach was evident every step of the way. On the day of the event, the entire staff was outstanding—warm, professional, and seamless in making everything run smoothly. They made our event feel special well before we even walked through the doors, and that level of care continued throughout the celebration.

I can’t recommend this team and location enough. Wonderful job, and thank you to everyone at Boone’s for making the day truly extra special.
