Old Original Bookbinder’s Restaurant is Richmond’s historic steakhouse, with a century and a half of history dating back to 1865. Though the original Philadelphia location closed, the Taxin family remains keenly aware of the glorious tradition that was built there and continues to be dedicated to excellence and the same formula that made the restaurant great in Samuel Bookbinder’s day: the choicest seafood, and the finest quality meat, fruits and vegetables available.
A onetime tobacco warehouse, this elegant, brick-walled eatery offers elevated Chesapeake fare.

Cool old building with lots of exposed brick and metal but still feels kind of cozy. Our service was very good. Drinks were delicious, bread is nice. The clam chowder was good, tasty but not great. The Jumbo Clam Linguine was okay. Not bad, not good. We (3 of us) agreed it was under seasoned and a little bland. The Rockfish special was tasty.

It’s not very often I experience the owner making their way through their restaurant checking on guests but that’s how it’s done here, along with fantastic food. The Kona coffee crusted filet was amazing as were the scallops. Definitely a great dining experience and coming from Houston, where I feel there are many world-class restaurants, this place stands out.

What a magical place to dine. It is romantic, waitstaff are spot on, there is a beautiful Koi pond out back. Last, but number one, the food is divine and cooked to perfection. What a special way to celebrate my birthday!!

We wish so badly we had a good experience. My husband surprised me for my birthday here for dinner with our 3 older children. We heard so many amazing recommendations and could not wait to experience it for ourselves.
We were greeted warmly upon arrival and the ambience was absolute perfection where we were seated.
Unfortunately the issue lies with our waiter. Three of our steaks were prepared incorrectly to the unfortunate point of having to send them back. Once we received them back from an entirely separate waiter, our original waiter never returned to check on us. They steaks came back prepared correctly the second time thankfully and were delicious.
Being that our waiter never returned, all 5 of us never received a refill on drinks and all were empty for the duration do the meal. We then sat for an endless amount of time and finally had to resort to asking another waitress to ask for our original waiter to get the check. We would have loved to stay for dessert , but it was clear that our waiter did not want to wait on tables that evening.
I’ve heard many others speak highly of this restaurant, but I guess it just wasn’t a night for us to experience that same service.

The food, the atmosphere, and especially the service all stood out. Our waiter did a fantastic job pacing the meal. Courses were timed perfectly, we never felt rushed, and he consistently checked in without being intrusive.
My wife started with oysters while I had the shrimp. We both followed with salads, and for entrées she ordered the large filet and I went with the cowboy ribeye. Every single dish was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. It was one of those meals where you genuinely don’t have a single complaint.
We enjoyed it so much that I later brought my company team back and reserved the Taxin Room. It made for a great private dining experience! Perfect atmosphere for hosting and a memorable night for the group.
Bookbinders is absolutely staying on our list of go-to spots in Richmond. We’re already looking forward to our next visit.

Haven’t been to Bookbinder’s since the late 80s in Philly. Hard to beat. Great food and service and loved the ambiance. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for. 5 stars. We will return.

Definitely a great place to celebrate a special occasion. Great level of service, count the staff, they rival the number of guests and it shows. Food was solid, was it the best steak of my life, probably not, but better than anywhere I’ve had locally or any national chain and it was cooked perfectly. The wine bottles are fairly priced as well IMO.

Brought the family out for a celebratory dinner. We appreciate the accommodations they made to get us in on such a busy day! Great customer service. The food was amazing. The portions were generous and the chefs did a wonderful job with presentation and flavor. Not my first time here and definitely won’t be my last.

Israel, Israel, Israel….that’s who our server was tonight!!! He was AMAZING!!! 10 OUT OF 10 HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! We traveled an hour to celebrate my birthday. I love books so I was drawn instantly to the name. The food was sooooo good. We weren’t sure what to order so we took suggestions from Israel and he did not disappoint. Now lets talk about the OWNER. He was a total vibe. Funny as hell and GENUINELY nice. You sometimes go to restaurants and the owner comes around and you can tell its routine and that they are just saying rehearsed words. Not at all the case tonight. Ohhh and the ring light….I dont want to do spoiler alerts but absolutely a genius idea and love that the owner is right there with you. You have to come yourself to see what I am talking about. Thank you for making my birthday an amazing experience. We will DEFINITELY come back!!!
