I recently moved to Valparaiso and visited Bon Femme for the first time a couple of months ago. I had a lovely meal and found the staff very friendly and attentive. Today, I was on call for work on Thanksgiving and my family was concerned about trying to prepare a big meal in case I was called away, so we made reservations at Bon Femme. The restaurant was decorated beautifully, the staff members were incredibly kind and welcoming, and the food was delicious. I have some special dietary restrictions, so I was uncertain about what I would be able to eat if anything. When the waitress found out, she personally investigated what dishes contained ingredients I could not eat. The chef even came out to talk to me and made me my own entrée on the spot to accommodate my dietary needs. I am so grateful to the staff at Bon Femme for making my family’s first Thanksgiving in Valparaiso so special and I will be back regularly in the future.

I’m not going to go back. Next time, we’ll go to Pikk’s next door–they deliver exceptional food, every time, for similar (even a bit smaller) prices.
Even though I saw its poor reviews, I really, really wanted to like this place. With entrees at around $20 & $30, I expected something wonderful. Our waiter was very good. We had the escargot appetizer, which was delicious. The bread the brought out was wonderful, too. My husband had the beet salad, and I had the wedge salad. Both were tasty and flavorful. Our drinks were good, too. With this build-up, we were expecting something exceptional for our expensive entrees.
Unfortunately, we were disappointed. My husband ordered the rib eye steak medium rare. When it came out, it was nicely seared on the outside and rare-raw in the center. The waiter took it back to have it cooked a little more. I ordered the salmon, and it came out overcooked and burnt on the bottom. I sent it back. When my husband’s steak came back out, it was charred on the bottom and perfectly medium-rare in the center. The new salmon that was sent out for me was slightly overcooked and this new piece was a bit blackened on the bottom. The mashed potatoes that came with my husband’s steak were good. The rice that came with my salmon was lackluster and seemed to come from a box-mix. We both had asparagus/green bean vegetables, too. I’m not sure why someone would desecrate asparagus with green beans, but I think that it may have been to save money (??).
I won’t pay $30 for a charred, yet medium-rare, steak, and $20 for an overcooked piece of salmon here again.

Pleasant enough, but “it’s okay” is a good overall description. Menu items like “meat and cheese board” (how about calling it charcuterie?) and “puff pastry wrapped beef” (again, why not call it beef wellington?) remind me that I’m in Valpo and not anywhere near France. Butter came out in individual packets, bread was store-bought and put under a heat lamp. Entrees were pretty good, not executed like a French restaurant but again like a Valpo restaurant.
If you’re afraid of real French food, this is a great place. The staff is friendly, though clearly not versed in the service industry. I’d go back if Buffalo Wild Wings has too long of a wait, but not if I’m trying to impress anyone.
Décor was pleasant, and overall the restaurant was clean.

I am sad to say this is strike 3 for Bon Femme. So, I venture back for a so-called quick dinner last night because I wanted crepes (note: for whatever odd reason BF decided that crepes are only a dinner item, very strange for a so-called French Restaurant) only to find the persistence of mediocrity in this former “go-to” restaurant. We get there and, for the third time in a row, they didn’t seem ready to open- too much scurrying around, lack of attention to customers. Why does this place have a bar? They do not staff the bar and it is haphazard at best to get a drink while you wait (and why wait when the place is empty anyway?). I am happy to report that the crepes were good. Everything else? Meh. Especially for the price. The curry chicken tasted like nothing and I mean nothing, no flavor on some lame white rice. I think it may have been a reheated Amy’s Organic entree. And the wine list? So sad. Mystery “house” for almost everything by the glass. A glass of “house” cab- faded, sour and old (I drank it anyway). So, I go for The Cab at $13 a glass, a treat!, only to get a flat, tasteless glass poured from yesterday’s (or, perhaps, the day before) bottle. All for $80 plus tip. Not a fat chance this will ever happen again- too many good options in Valpo. Someone needs to take over the management of BF and bring it back!
