Great happy hour drinks and wonderful service at the bar. Atmosphere very relaxed and pleasant. Definitely going back.
To be fair, the food itself was very good, which made this experience even more disappointing. Our server was inattentive, and there was an unusually long delay between receiving our appetizers and entrées. Unfortunately, things went downhill once the main course arrived.
My friend and I both ordered the rigatoni alla vodka, and the portion size was shockingly small, so small that it looked like something served to a child. There was barely a handful of pasta on the plate, to the point where you could practically count each piece (I truly wish I had taken a photo).
Dessert was even more disappointing. Each dessert we selected was cut in half, which prompted me to ask the server if this was because we ordered from the Restaurant Week menu. To my surprise, he said yes. That is incredibly distasteful.
What made this experience worse was noticing that the table next to us ordered the exact same pasta did not participate in the Restaurant Week menu. Their pasta was served full to the brim, and they received full sized desserts. The difference in treatment was obvious and uncomfortable.
Everything we ate tasted good, but the service disparities and reduced portions for Restaurant Week guests completely overshadowed that. We’ve participated in Restaurant Week for years and have never experienced a restaurant intentionally cutting portion sizes like this. Typically, when we enjoy a restaurant during Restaurant Week, we return later to try the full menu but that will not be the case here.
If it’s too costly for Bocca di Bacco Chelsea to participate in Restaurant Week without cutting corners, then they simply shouldn’t participate. Treating guests differently based on the menu they choose is unacceptable. Because of this experience, we won’t be returning or recommending this restaurant to others.
I’ve added photos the desserts we received and the plating at the neighboring table.
Happy hour crab cakes for $12 come on. Total steal. The oysters were from Connecticut and tasted insanely fresh, like they’d just come out of the water. The wild salmon was perfectly cooked and priced way better than you’d expect for Chelsea.
But what really made the night was the bartender, Danny. Super warm, attentive, great energy, and just made us feel welcome without being over the top. Exactly the vibe you want after a long travel day.
Great food, great prices, great people. Total jam. We’ll absolutely be back.
The menu was well-balanced, and everything tasted delicious. I visited with my friends, and we enjoyed all the food and wine — a wonderful dining experience overall!
