Once you find the Blue Ox Bar, you’ll find it hard to leave. Cozily tucked away just behind the main lobby of Timberline Lodge, it’s a favorite hole-in-the-wall watering hole steeped in history. In 1937, when the lodge was nearly finished, someone noticed there was no bar. Improvising architects altered a wood storage area into the Blue Ox Bar. Restored glass mosaic murals illustrate the well-known Paul Bunyan—and his beloved blue ox, Babe—legend. The bar menu features flatbread pizza and other delectable snacks, Mt. Hood Brewing Co. microbrews, and seasonal cocktail offerings.

They had a really lovely experience there, and the view was beautiful. Even though it was summer, the area felt calm and inviting. The server was fantastic, and the portion sizes were quite generous. It’s definitely a good idea to ask about the sizes before you order. We forgot to do that, and when we ordered nachos, they ended up being enough to feed four people! We were so hungry and didn’t realize how large they would be, so we unfortunately had to waste some food. It’s always better to double-check with the staff before placing your order.

Went there on Saturday and it was so bizarre. There was one party in front of me and it took like 15 minutes to get their drinks and order.

First they ordered shots and the bartender wouldn’t serve them because they didn’t have ID.

Then one of the guys ordered a beer. She went and got a beer.

Then the other guy ordered some rum and coconut drink and the bartender disappeared to find malibu or rum or whatever in the back room. Then she returned and made his drink.

Then one of the guys tried to order a drink but she wouldn’t serve him. So then he ordered a Shirley Temple. She left and made a Shirley Temple.

Then they decided to order a pizza so the asked questions about the menu and finally ordered.

They tried to charge it to the room but they hadn’t checked in. Then they split the tab between two credit cards. Three drinks and a pizza split on two cards.

I was standing there the entire time waiting for these people to order. I couldn’t figure out if this was a normal interaction or if it was some bizarre ritual.

I felt so frustrated waiting for these people for 15 minutes when all I wanted was beer. I don’t know if I am overreacting or not. I felt ashamed I was so upset. But it was so enraging watching these customers order, the staff running around stocking the bar, and this poor bartender catering to these people who acted like they had never been to a bar before.

There are three bars at Timberline Lodge. You should probably skip them and go to Ratskeller in Gov’t Camp.

Stopped in for a pizza with the fam. Fun atmosphere with cool mosaics and historic furniture. Feels a bit like something from LOTR.

We stuck with a cheese pizza which we all enjoyed (kids included). Just let it cool for 10 minutes before trying to eat… pizza comes out hot and perfectly melty. With a family of 4, we ate about 3/4s of the pizza and took the rest to go.

Staff were cordial and server was busy but also friendly. Gotta love that refreshing glacier water!

Some say it’s the most iconic bar in Oregon, and that may be true. But what’s not to love about the Blue Ox Bar. Great cocktails, amazing pizzas and appetizers and probably the best gluten free vegan pizza on Mt Hood. If you’re up riding Timberline Fridays through Monday’s and don’t sleep on this special spot to gran a drink and a bite, I’ll see you there!

Very cozy atmosphere, probably only holds about 20 people, and prices were pretty decent as well. Staff was very friendly and food and drinks were good!

From the time I walked in the waiter/bartender started to harassing me. Telling me if I’m alone I will need to move when a larger party walks in. Yelling this from behind me. Then after never asking if I wanted anything he comes over and tells me I have to move. There was no larger group down there. I told him I was leaving that he keeps harassing me to leave instead of treating me like a patron.

I’m not one to waste food but my wife and I had lunch at the bar this week and couldn’t eat either of the things we ordered. The tomato basil soup was barely warm and was inedible. The artichoke dip and (fake) naan bread smelled horrible and tasted worse. The $11 lemonade spritzer was the most expensive glass of ice that I have ever paid for. The granola bar that we ate at the car after was the best part. Bottom line – pack your own food but enjoy walking around the spectacular lodge.

I highly recommend the flaming grand Moroccan coffee and the Hohnstein’s cocktail to drink from Tyler. Then order the meatballs and salad to share with someone. We had plenty of food for the two of us and the meatballs were the best I have had in a restaurant.
