We had a great time stopping by Blue Ocean for lunch during our day trip to the Cove. A little off the main street, it offers likely one of the best views of the shoreline (you can see the seals!), but only if you get seated along the window.
We tried quite a lot of food. For appetizers, their hamachi kama (cheeks) were huge and delicious! For entrees, their ramens were balanced and well made, but their raw fish options stand out. We had their Rainbow (soft shell crab) and Marine Boy (spicy tuna) rolls, and both were delicious, and portions were generous (see pics). Additionally, their have an Omakase Box which, when we visited, was priced at $55. It may change in content and price when you visit. However, as someone who’s had a lot of sushi (including many times in Japan), this box was objectively excellent. I received a generous serving of essentially everything on their a la carte menu: eel, uni, toro, hamachi, albacore, maguro, and salmon, along with a nice seaweed salad and some tekka maki. We were very impressed! Even from a supermarket this collection would easily run $50+, and here we were enjoying super fresh, high quality sashimi (for instance, uni had no fishiness and light sweetness) with an ocean view at a reasonable price. We’ll probably return just to eat this again (independent of the view and the Cove).
Service was… mixed. There were some friendly folks, and some that were less so. We did have a service-related issue come up during our visit, which could have made it a 3-star rather than a 5-star experience, but fortunately, the manager, Ozzy, came through for us to save the day. Thanks again Ozzy!
All in all, we had a wonderful time and will definitely be back, and I highly recommend stopping by as part of a Cove day or just to eat the sushi.
We were seated at the last table by the window. Yes! Gorgeous view of the ocean, the many varieties of birds, and sea lions sunbathing on the beach below.
We took advantage of their great lunch special. You get to choose an appetizer and entree. We both chose the pork belly bao and a full size ramen combo for $18. The Me So Hot ramen was delicious with a nice heat. Delicious!
My kids loved the sweet Nutella buns
The yellowtail jalapeno roll is fresh and flavorful with a tangy sauce. The grilled hanachi kama tasted soft, and the ribeye terayaki was a flavor blast with the softest beef pieces.
The character buns are adorable, memorable, and tasty. The bun is so soft and both the cow beef and bunny Nutella buns are a great pick!
