It is a very simple menu – the vegetarian feast, a variety of aromatic plant based stews eaten with teff injera. The teff injera flatbread was fresh and warm, perfect for scooping up all of the vegetables and meats. They were perfectly sliced and I appreciated how many different flavors there were. The lentils and cabbage were especially good. However, meat has to be ordered separately, and came in a bit smaller portions. We got 3 meat dishes, doro wat (spicy chicken), yebeg alecha (lamb), and zilzil wat (spicy beef). The chicken was the best – flavorful with the perfect amount of spice and fall off the bone tender. The lamb was tender, but a little too fatty for our liking. The beef was a bit too salty. Finally we ordered the crème brûlée for dessert, which was so smooth and rich.
Another thing we loved was that the food wasn’t too heavy – a great balance of protein and fiber, and as they mentioned on the menu limited fats. The dishes were light and rich with flavor at the same time.
The service was amazing, we were constantly checked up on to get more refills of bread and vegetables. They even brought out warm towels to clean our hands. Everything was explained to us since it was our first time. The food came out very quickly and we had no wait at all to get a table. The ambience and decorations were nice as well. Overall, a wonderful vegetable focused restaurant with unique flavors and exceptional service.
The food itself was just as amazing. The dining style is authentic Ethiopian, big trays lined with fresh injera (that soft, spongy bread that they just keep bringing out) topped with colorful vegetarian dishes: lentils, greens, cabbage, split peas, potatoes, and more. Everything was full of flavor, rich with spices but still incredibly light and fresh. In the center of our table we ordered some meat dishes, and wow- the chicken and beef literally fell off the bone, tender and perfectly seasoned. My favorite was the stewed beef, slow-cooked until it melted in your mouth.
One of the best surprises was how healthy everything was. Ethiopian food is naturally low in fat, high in protein and carbs, and packed with flavor, which is seriously perfect fuel after a workout. You leave feeling full, satisfied, but not heavy. This is hands down going to be my go-to spot post-gym.
Between the incredible service, healthy yet filling food, and the family-style experience of sharing everything together, Blue Nile easily deserves more than five stars. If you’re in Ann Arbor, don’t just eat here, experience it.
Came back a decade later, and it hasn’t changed a bit. In a market as tough as AA, especially after COVID, the fact that this place has thrived for decades is a true testament to their quality, the way they run their business, and the owners’ vision. God bless your family!
I’ve been here multiple times, but decided to bring My friend here for his birthday for a different experience.
He loved the decor as well as the food. He tried to use his fork once, but I took it from here because I wanted him to receive the full experience of eating with our hands.
The servers are so nice and the bathroom is always clean.
My friend also got a free meal.
I live 45min away from Ann Arbor, but it’s always worth the drive.
