Reviews
The place was clean and well maintained, which made the dining experience pleasant.
The servers were friendly and attentive throughout our visit.
The ingredients were fresh, and everything tasted great. ⭐
Service was awesome. Super friendly. Presentation of food was very important for them, as the chef came out to correct the presentation when the servers placed the food on the table, which I found pretty impressive.
Food was very fresh and super tasty. It is a tad pricey, so it’s a place for a nice treat. Although for the area, prices are high, but after eating here, it is justified.
The plating is beautiful, and I tried a variety of dishes—none of them were disappointing. My personal favorites were the shishito peppers, the bluefin nigiri set, the truffle & wagyu aburi sushi, and the wagyu yakiniku.
The atmosphere is also great for enjoying wine, and the pairing with the food was excellent. Overall, this is easily one of the best restaurants I’ve been to recently. Highly recommend!
We ordered the Petit Omakase Plate, Tempura Udon, House Roll and Real Crab California roll. One thing I like about their menu is that they have a lot of options so you can go fancy with their specialty blue fin tuna options or also more casual like how we did in this case.
I don’t have any complaints of the food, it was decent but not amazing sushi. However, if I had to recommend anything, it’d be the petit omakase plate. I liked the variety it offers, presentation was nice and all of the samples were good – it gives a good representation of what the place can offer. Overall, would I return? If I were in the area and it was convenient, yes but I wouldn’t say it’s a destination sushi spot. I know they have some instagram worthy dishes if you like to take pictures, but I evaluate more on if I was impressed with the food and if I feel the value was worth the price. In this case, I’d say the pricing was fair and portion size was decent for sure, but it’s definitely not my favourite sushi spot.
We started with the prawn tempura, which was delicious—the batter was light, perfectly cooked, and didn’t feel greasy at all. For mains, my daughter loved the fresh salmon noodles, and my son enjoyed the spicy salmon donburi; he handles heat well, but even he noted it had a serious (but tasty) kick! I had the beef teriyaki, which came with rice and miso soup. Every bite was excellent.
The restaurant is cozy with a pleasant, quiet atmosphere. While they only have four underground parking spots, street parking is available. Service was polite and incredibly fast—we were in and out within an hour. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in the area!
Came here the first time during its opening week after seeing it popped up on IG. Did a walk in and didn’t know reservation was needed or recommended, but the wait was short.
Some of the staffs were still in training, the atmosphere was casual yet vibrant. Nice little place.
After trying the food from each category, some fell quite short during the first visit, almost deterred me from coming back, but the chef/ owner came over with kind gestures and before leaving I promised I will come back to give it a second chance (although he said I wont by the sounds of my concerns).
Anyways, VOILA! Here I am back for a second try (unfortunately already forgotten a dissatisfied customer lol). Here’s the result the second time around…
After being seated, here were the food I ordered;
1. Miso soup. Pretty basic but it was more luke warm than hot, simple inexpensive item but restaurants should take note that sometimes little items could set the tone for the experience.
2. Appy 4pcs (appetizer tempura. It’s pretty good. Had that light soft crunch to the batter without the greasiness.
3. Oyster motoyaki. Nice little layer of cheese and used a few fresh whole oysters to complete the dish but wish it was less watery and the outside a bit more caramelized.
4. Wagyu aburi carpaccio. It was tender but lack depth and taste ( and the fried garlic slices were as hard as rocks?!?)
5. Seafood tower for 2. Everything was okay, I wouldn’t say it’s a great deal but it did add up to its value (out of kusshi oysters, had to replace with another kind but cost $4 more, not about the money, experience restaurant or business would’ve simply absorbed it)
6. Bluefin sashimi trio. It was okay but the Akami could be better with a more bold red colour, it was almost a chutoro. As for the chu toro, a bit lacking in that nice rich buttery taste. The otoro was buttery but wish it was more of a center cut to have a bit of texture.
7. Madai, wild salmon, foie gras, A5 wagyu, ikura nigiris. The wagyu and foie gras were on the drier side, missing that rich buttery taste. The rest of the nigiris were pretty fresh.
8. Uni nigiris. Pretty good, good balance of uni and rice ratio.
9. Okra fry. It is what it is.
10. Truffle cream udon. Yes and no…. Yes it’s nice that a few small slices of truffle sprinkled on top but no because besides that the dish just wasn’t it?!? Udon swimming in a little pool of light cream sauce just didn’t excite my tastebuds.
This place is definitely a nice little addition to the Joyce neighborhood. It’s vibrant with high ceilings, and cozy with a welcoming atmosphere.
As for its service; very friendly and attentive staffs throughout the course of the meal. In addition, explain the arrival of each dish.
The food overall was decent and improved a bit since the first visit but could be better in certain areas still but that will come with time. Hopefully one day if I do return to give it another try, it will be better.
Anyways, as promised to the owners: chef, I went back to give it a 2nd try (honestly, if it wasn’t for the nice gestures at the end of the 1st visit from the chef/ owners, I wasn’t planning to be back lol). Unfortunately, it fell short abit 2nd time around, nevertheless, I do recommend a try if you are in the neighbourhood and reservation is recommended during peak hours.
Food quality:
The food is incredibly fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor in every dish. Each item tastes carefully prepared, from the sushi to the hot dishes, and portions feel generous without sacrificing quality. Cocktails were a very nice touch…
Service:
The service is excellent, with staff who are friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. Orders arrive promptly, and the team checks in just enough to ensure everything is perfect without ever feeling intrusive.
Overall experience:
The atmosphere is comfortable and inviting, making it a great place for both casual meals and special occasions. With its combination of great food and outstanding service, Blue Coast Japanese Restaurant is an easy 5-star recommendation.
