I just wish the food that aren’t appetizers or picky bits were better. I wound up getting a mushroom cheese tortellini pasta and it was fine, but pretty expensive for the quality of food I consumed.
I went with a friend for Manayunk Restaurant Week, and overall, I had a LOVELY time! But as a reviewer, I keep thinking that if I didn’t have such good company and cheap restaurant week prices, I would ultimately be disappointed in the Blondie experience (“One Way or Another” as the great Debbie Harry once said).
Their Restaurant Week menu is pretty sick in that there are two options: a $15 2-course, and a $35 4-course. I opted for the $15 “light & fresh” menu which definitely didn’t feel skimpy: it gets you one app and one full sized salad! I think this is a FAB steal because you get a very generous portion of food for less than $20!
For my app, I chose the Honey Garlic Chicken Skewers, which are described as “garlic chili crunch, sweet soy, pickled cucumber, & sesame seeds.” And for the most part, those skewers delivered! I was given 3 lovingly charred swords of chicken thigh, brushed with a sticky sweet glaze. These skewers were hella juicy and gave “Chinese bourbon chicken from the mall” vibes in the best way. The “pickled cucumbers” were clearly sliced Vlasic bread and butter chips, but hey, I’ll eat any kind of pickle. My issue is that for the atmosphere and price (typically a $15 dish by itself on the regular menu), this was far too expensive for the lack of finesse. For a place named “Blondie,” I was expecting a chic-ly plated dish (not a dish haphazardly splattered with an oily sauce), and certainly not chicken that tasted like my 2012 post-Aeropostale-shift meal at the mall. But like I said, as part of my $15 deal, I could not complain!
For my salad entree, I did the Warm Shrimp Caesar Salad. These shrimp were PLUMP and truly some of the biggest restaurant shrimp I’ve seen! Again, a very generous portion for $15. The shrimp were perfectly cooked (not rubbery!) and had a nice charred flavor. But let’s talk the actual salad: while it tasted “fine” (I mean who doesn’t love Caesar?), it was clearly bottled dressing that was gloopy and heavy, overdressed and oversalted from a heavy Parmesan hand. And as an Italian-American girly, I can handle my parm, but this was an amount of cheese that would make my nonnina say “basta!” As I said above, I didn’t super care about my salty salad because for $15, hell yeah! But I would be disappointed if I paid $23 (the normal menu price) for this dish.
I really do love the atmosphere in here: the green/gold color palette, funky wallpapers, and pretty mirrors behind the bar make for such a fun and girly vibe. My friend and I also heavily enjoyed how they were silently playing “The Equalizer 2” on a large TV behind the bar. But I wish the prices were better (my Diet Coke was $5, 1/3 of the price of the meal itself), and the service could have been quicker (we were in the restaurant for 2 hours). But would I go back for a cute girly cocktail in the future? Honestly, probably yes! But I would skip the food—there are better spots for your money on Main St.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks later. Ordered the same dulce de leche French toast. This thing came out BURNT and still wet in the middle. Not only that, but no dulce de leche. Had to get it on the side. If I’m paying $$ for bread with condiments, I would at least expect it to have the condiments. Haven’t been back since. Service was great that time though. Seems you cant have both at this establishment.
Side note, the decor and atmosphere is very nice.
The deviled eggs were good. Spicy and crunchy but I was prepared for that as it stated that in the menu. I was not prepared for the 3 crab cakes or tater tots ( because that was the size of the cakes) they brought out. I believe it was served with a pepper melody and arugula. I was not impressed. The cheese steak rolls were ok.
They did remove the items from the bill and I didn’t eat anything else.
We took our friend out for her birthday and decided to split the bill 3 ways. There was a 1.5% service charge on each bill. I’m not sure if that was from us spliting it or what. That was not explained prior.
Tips starts at 20% and normally I’m happy to give a 20% tip but in this case…Issa no for me.
I personally wouldn’t recommend this place for anything other then drinks (But what do I know I didn’t get to eat or drink much).
I did have a $9.00 bottle of sparkling water. That was actually good as far as water is concerned. ♀️
We are regular customers of Blondies, so we clearly enjoy dining @ this restaurant.
