Back in December, my family decided to visit Blackwall to celebrate my birthday in January. We had to wait until reservations opened up on 1/16, and made them for the 24th at 6:30. Two of my kids arrived at 6:15 pm, advised the hostess, and got drinks at the bar. The rest of us arrived at 6:25 pm, let the hostess know, and joined them at the bar, There were no seats available in the bar area. We had nowhere to stand because they had given up the 2 seats at the bar, thinking we would be seated soon. It was zero degrees outside, so that wasn’t an option. At 7:10, we were told our table was ready, and at 7:15, they crammed the 6 of us into a booth. Three of the party are over 6’2, so this was very tight and uncomfortable. The manager apologized for the wait and comped 3 appetizers, but that just wasn’t enough to make us ever want to visit again. I spent the entire meal jammed into a tiny corner against the wall. We also spent a lot of time with empty drinks and empty water glasses. We shared brussels sprouts, fried lobster, and crab dip. I ordered the scallop and shrimp risotto, which was tasty. RJ said his steak was “good” but gave this place a 1 for the experience. When we were asked if we wanted another round or dessert, the answer was no. I’m bumping to a 2 because at least the wait was recognized, and we did get 3 free appetizers.

Arrived at 5pm to sit at the bar but no seats available so sat at a 2-top behind the bar. Bombay Sapphire martini with Blue Cheese Olives ($15) was a good start along with a Knob Creek Manhatten ($18). A bit pricey but expected. Flaming Crab Dip ($24) served cold crab along with a side of ??. Flagged down a waitress and asked where the flame was and she poured the liquid over the crab to produce the flame? Odd. Fried Green Tomatoes ($16) were super thin and also cold with a lot of bread crumbs. Calamari ($22) was super disappointing also served cold, limp, no crunch and undercooked. Brussel sprouts ($13) were the highlight. Served cold but edible. Bottle of Tbrunner Pino Grigio ($48) sat on the table with no cooler or ice bucket. Also thought this was an odd presentation of a bottle of wine. Ended with Espresso martinis ($14) which were delicious but the Smith Island Cake – YUK! HARD, STALE, COLD. The manager came over just checking on us and we shared our thoughts on the cake. She said they are still working out the kinks on delivery of their specialty cake and ended up taking it off of our bill which we didn’t ask but certainly appreciative of the gesture. Will try again as it’s a new establishment. Parking was not friendly.

There’s almost no signage indicating the restaurant which is odd. The best thing was the calamari (which was $22 ) the worst was the Smith Island cake. The cake was very much not fresh and incredibly dry. The crab dip was okay but sweeter than anticipated. The French onion soup was solid and the caprese canoe was cute (but $11??). The restaurant was very cold since we sat by the door. There also wasn’t a waiting area. We had a reservation but there was a 2+ hour wait which in my opinion would not be worth it.

I really wanted to leave 5 stars but I couldn’t due to a few things that could be easily fixed for future business. A spacious restaurant with comfortable seating and several private dining spaces of various sizes. Cute/moody interior with some quirky decor. We arrived at 5 and the place was pretty empty but packed and with a wait it seemed when we left at 6:45 ish.

Things I enjoyed :
Plenty of parking
Friendly staff
The decor/ambiance
The taste of the food
The portion of the kids meal

Areas with room For improvement :
External signage of the business (currently there is none)
Inability to make reservations online or on the phone (though on arrival the staff said, just ignore our recording)
Time from food ordered to table was a bit slow
There’s a 3% service fee for using the credit card (this may be addressed for the customer On the menu but we missed that if it is there).
Entry way is a bit crowded to check in/wait for a table and have people exiting.

I am likely to return but now know to pay with another form to Avoid any extra charges and try to aggressively press buttons to get to a person who can book a reservation and ignore the google assistant.

Really enjoyed this restaraunt. We only stuck to the first page of the menu and got drinks and apps. The Brussels sprouts are incredible! Duck fat fries are good but tbh didn’t seem like anything special (sriracha ketchup was good). The crab soup was flavorful and warm.

I got the blood orange infused vodka which tased excellent but also strong (not a complaint) 🙂

Nice to have a new quality restaraunt in Wilmington!!!

What a great Valentine’s Day! Our meal was amazing and our server Colleen was our server and she was just a gem! Great service, attention to detail and delicious food! I ordered the scallop risotto and it was so beautiful the risotto was pink from the beets! The scallops were tender and buttery! I finished with a slice of peanut butter pie! To die for!!!!

Wanted to try this restaurant, but was very disappointed. For the price of the entrees ($44 and $48) they should be fabulous. They were – meh. We had crab cakes – lots of crab, but bland and dry. The cocktail sauce was not cocktail sauce. Tasted like ketchup with a bit of something else (not horseradish). It came with potatoes and spinach. Both bland, nothing special. We also got the prime rib. We had to ask for steak knives, and we really needed them. Prime rib should be easily cut with a regular knife. This one required steak knives. The flavor was good, but the meat was not tender the way it should be. The biscuits were small and dry. Drinks were okay. Staff was excellent.

Bottom line, I would not waste my money on dinner. I would go again, but probably only for happy hour. One last note – when the sun was setting it was in peoples’ eyes; they were holding things up to shield their eyes. They have no shade for the window. The waitress said “I promise in 10 minutes or so it will be gone.” While I applaud her kindness and effort, I shouldn’t have to be uncomfortable for 10 or 15 minutes during a meal, especially one that is high-priced.

Final answer: Sadly, it appears to be a run-of-the-mill corporate restaurant.

I went to Blackwall Barn & Lodge with 3 friends for New Year’s Eve dinner. We arrived on time for a 6:15 reservation, and ordered from the fixed price menu. Crab dip appetizer, an extra which was delicious, and drinks (I couldn’t taste any alcohol in mine) came out in a reasonable amount of time, as did soup and salad. I usually like my salad lightly dressed, but this Caesar salad tasted like it had no dressing at all. Then we ordered a bottle of wine and waited for our entrees. Our nice waiter, Lacey, was very attentive and apologetic. He brought us very good biscuits. He apparently reminded the kitchen, but our entrees were not available. By 10:15 when the wine was long gone and no food had come out yet, the restaurant was almost empty. A four hour wait for our entrees is unacceptable, even on a holiday at a fledgeling restaurant. We decided we were leaving. The staff gave us our food to go and comped the food but we paid for the drinks.

I reheated my ($80) dinner mostly in the oven tonight. The potatoes and shrimp were very good. The steak did not seem like a filet. It was very tough and fatty. It looked like another cut of beef cut in half. Even in family steakhouses, I’ve never seen a filet that shape, nor that tough. It was vaguely reminiscent of the $1.99 steak I used to get at Tad’s in New York City a long time ago. Thank God I still have all my teeth.

Despite the nice waiter and atmosphere, I absolutely do NOT recommend this restaurant.

We came on Valentine’s Day. Colleen was our server and she was wonderful! Naturally it was super busy, but atmosphere and Drinks were great!!l We started with the calamari, which came out hot and fresh. The aïoli and oriental dipping sauce were very good. I ordered a harvest salad and my husband had the beef barley soup. The harvest salad was ample portion and everything was fresh and delicious. I loved that they did not Use too much dressing. Just enough. The beef barley soup was different in that it came with beef meatballs versus shredded beef, which was different. My husband’s just not a meatball guy, he thought I was going to have the braised beef. That said, It was flavorful and rich! For dinner I had the Chesapeake pasta, which was a wonderful portion. The homemade pasta was tender and flavorful. Lobster sauce was creamy and not overwhelming. My husband had the chef’s special chicken pot pie. We both personally thought it could’ve used a little bit more herbs or seasoning. Beyond that it was very good! For dessert, we ordered the chocolate peanut butter pie to share, and it was by far the best chocolate peanut butter pie we’ve ever had! So delicious! Overall, it was a very, very good evening! Thank you!

Time is a precious commodity. Our time was not respected. Party of 6. Arrive at 6:15pm for a 6:30pm reservation. Two empty high tops near the bar we could have been seated. Finally got seated well past 7:30pm in a cramped booth. Comped some appetizers. Horrible way to treat customers. Food was mid at best. Surprised they have 4.1 stars. Never going back there. Much better options in the area.
