A Christmas Eve Birthday is a hard thing to plan sometimes but, the Black Hen made it easy. The food was excellent, the service was quick and considerate, and the environment was nice and cozy for a rambuncious party of 5. Appetizer or entree you might wanna bring someone to share it with because the portion sizes are definitely family size! Thank you for making this year memorable with our matriarch 🙂

I’m a fan of soul food, and this place doesn’t disappoint. Everything we had was delicious:
Deviled Eggs
Chicken Cheesesteak Beignets
Fried Chicken
Candied Yams
Collard Greens
Mac & Cheese
Peach Cobbler Hand Pies!
The one thing that really stood out was the Chicken Cheesesteak Beignets. Honey…if they set up a shop in NOLA just selling these, they would be the new staple beignets of Crescent City.
*I just wouldn’t arrived as soon as they open up. They were a little delayed when first opening up.

So I have been wanting to try hen of the woods mushroom burger so when I saw it on the menu I was so excited. It came out looking beautiful bigger than life and delicious crispy fries… everything is looking good!! First 2 bites are average almost like a cornbread coating but not bad so I was settling in to enjoy my meal. My next bite was met with a grisly textured core maybe that I pulled out of the sandwich and it was very hard even when using a fork. I showed it to my waitress and her response was less than stellar she asked if I wanted another but couldn’t tell what or why that was in my sandwich and when I tried to get some understanding from another staff who actually had a great idea to ask the chef my waitress butted in to further NOT ASSIST ME! I really just want to know if there was an error in preparation, or is that normal in that type of mushroom. Sadly I left dissatisfied after paying 20 bucks for a burger that I couldn’t finish. The dessert was good but don’t expect good service

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. The service is terrible and well I can’t comment on the food as we never made it that far. My partner and I decided to give this place a try Saturday night(2/28). From the moment we walked in the vibe felt off but decided to give it a shot anyway. Once I walked in I was greeted by who I thought was the hostess and was asked if I was dinning in or taking out. I stated I was dinning in and was told to hold for a moment. The female then proceeded to walk to the back and stand by the kitchen. About 15 mins pass by and another lady walks up to us asking if we have been helped. I reply saying the other female had said to hold on and had walked away. She asked if I was dinning in or taking out and I again state I was dinning in. She says she’ll be getting my tanks ready to give her a few mins. A few mins go by and we was shown to our table and nothing else was said to us. I seen another gentleman running the food to the other tables and thought the server would be with us soon. BIG MISTAKE!! We sat at the table for about 15 mins before getting a little annoyed decided to give it another 10 mins and nothing. No server no water no acknowledgement. There is a total of 9 tables inside that establishment and only 5 were taken prior to us getting there. ALL the tables had their food already. After about 30 mins of sitting at the table and not being acknowledged my partner and I decided to walk out. I really walked into this black owned business in old city thinking it would be a good experience and unfortunately it was not.

Let me tell y’all about a delicious experience. This place serves top notch chicken “things”. Starting with deviled eggs which a slight sweetness and the chicken cheesesteak beignets that were perfectly seasoned. The chicken stack sandwich had this delicious slaw and batter fried pickle! The chicken was juicy fried just right. The collard greens, candied yams and Mac was all way above average. The peach cobbler is like a mini empanada and fantastic!! The only thing I wouldn’t recommend is the banana pudding, it’s either instant pudding or they used a bit too much banana flavoring in it.
The server was very attentive and the food came rather quickly. The space itself is very intimate, tables kind of close together but that did not take away from the experience at all.

We came in at 10:30 on a Friday night and was seated in minutes. Service was friendly (Mani was great) and welcoming and food didn’t take long to come out. We enjoyed the crispy fried chicken with the golden sunrise sauce (sweet and fruity sauce – reminded us of a smokey orange chicken sauce). The mac and cheese and crispy brussel sprouts were also delicious.
Side note: street parking nearby was crowded and nearly impossible to find. We had to park about a 10 minutes walk away.

Let me start off by saying that the ambiance in this place is amazing. It’s such a good vibe from the moment you step in. Our server Rachel was amazing. We were sat within about 7 minutes of us walking in on an early Friday evening. The service was fast and good. All of the food was served hot and very good. Everything was packed with flavor. The Mac and cheese was very cheesy and was a big portion. The yams were good and the chicken was good had a very good flavor and a good crunch to it just like I like it. The chicken dip was also very good and did not have that overbearing hot sauce taste to it. I loved that it had that good baked cheesy top to it. The deviled eggs were amazing. Loved the sweet taste they had to them and that crunchy piece of chicken skin. Now that refreshing tropical lemonade topped it off and brought it all together. Food was amazing, service amazing and ambience amazing. Can’t wait to go back and try something else.

I struggled whether to give 4 or 5 stars and while I enjoyed the food, I’ll likely not return. So 4 stars it is.
What they did well:
Greeted and seated right away. Friendly service. The server knew details about dishes and made recommendations. Mac was good. Not greasy yet cheesy. Chicken cheese steak beignets were delicious. Smoked wings and fried wings had good flavor. Greens were great. The cornbread was moist. Yams were not too mushy nor too sweet. The sparkling water was delicious.
What could be improved:
Prices were high for the portion sizes.
Please find a different wing supplier. The size of the wings were borderline disrespectful. I asked for cornbread as one of my sides and the piece was barely 2″x2″.
Spice – flavors were good but a bit more spiciness could have gone a long way in several dishes. Even the sauce that was ‘sweet and spicy’ was very sweet.
Some foods were piping hot while others were just warm.
I didn’t like that the sides were on separate plates. The tables aren’t big enough for that.
I wish there was more meat in the greens.

Everything was delicious in a small intimate setting. We had a reservation and were seated within five minutes or so. Our server was extremely polite and attentive the first time we went. All of the dishes were absolutely tasty. The only thing I didn’t enjoy that much, was the banana pudding because it was made with banana flavored pudding instead of vanilla pudding. They had run out of cornbread dressing, so we were offered the cornbread and accompanying sauces. The variety of sauces were simply delectable. The cornbread was moist and delicious, but I would’ve preferred the cornbread dressing. The greens were seasoned perfectly. The fried chicken was very tasty with a creative presentation! The deviled eggs were good, but the fried chicken skin on top was cold and it tasted like it had been refrigerated for a while. While it was still good, I would have preferred a freshly prepared, set of deviled eggs. This place is BYOB. The smoked chicken wings were tasty, but they needed to have been cooked a little longer. They were tough. Oh, the fried pies… OMG!!!!

I’ve eaten at the Black Hen several times and it is hit or miss. They must have different chef’s. The deviled eggs, chicken and cornbread are consistently delicious, but you take your changes with everything else. Today, the chicken with greens egg rolls was absolutely tasteless, the side of greens were salty. I had been salivating about their chicken egg rolls for over a month, imagine my disappointment. It was absolutely delicious the first time. Not sure, if I will return. But I’ll return to Amina’s.
