We had to ask for everything. Coffee served without silverware or sugar. Asked for more sugar and got one package. Had to ask for more. Ordered the cheese steak, was supposed to be on a roll, it was on Texas toast. It was dry and meat was overcooked. The onion rings were good. The waiter was terrible. He never checked on us and we ate in the bar area. Only two other tables had patrons. I would never recommend or eat here again.

I’ve been visiting Black Mountain Cafe for a little over a year now, probably 6 to 8 times. I wouldn’t call myself a regular, but I’ve been here enough to give a fair perspective. Every visit, the breakfast has been consistently spot on, and the lemonade is excellent.

I read a negative review last night, and it actually prompted me to come back this morning. I was greeted and taken care of by a very kind Arianna who even acknowledged that we’ve been here before — so maybe we’re becoming regulars after all, lol.

I noticed that review mentioned an unusually long wait time, and while I respect that person’s experience, I want to share a counterpoint. In all of my visits, service has been smooth and seating has never been an issue. Waiting over an hour feels like the exception, not the rule.

I usually only post reviews when service is either really poor or really great, but seeing a place I enjoy being criticized so harshly made me want to share my own experiences. I don’t have any connection to the cafe, and it’s a 25-minute drive for me, so it’s not even in my neighborhood.

Since I’m writing this while sitting here today, I’ve included some photos to show what my experience looks like:

Fresh lemonade and iced tea served in mason jars, perfect for a warm morning.

A smooth latte with nice presentation.

Biscuits and gravy with eggs and hash browns — hearty, flavorful, and exactly the kind of breakfast that keeps me coming back.

This place deserves credit for consistency, great service, and quality food.

This was our first visit. Kelsey was very helpful with advice and the fine tuning of our orders. Food was good, atmosphere was very relaxed.

A great find with friendly owners. Have eaten here about a dozen times for breakfast and dinner. No complaints. Breakfast high lites are fresh baked cinnamon rolls, oversized pancakes, and fluffy French toast. Children’s menu available when I bring grandkids. Rarely had to wait for table as there’s seating inside as well as outside with heat lamps available during cool temps. Reservations accepted. Friendly staff who hustle with their busy cliental. Great music on weekends both at night and afternoons.

Tonight is karaoke Tuesday with Evan as our DJ. CHEF Jeff is on point again tonight, the green bean appetizer was excellent and the pretzel bites with beer cheese, oh so yummy. My wings were very tasty and Stacey’s Cobb salad was so good. Come out to Carefree and stop by the Black Mountain Cafe. Jarod is serving tasty adult beverages too.

Everything was great here. The outdoor seating was pleasing to the eyes and comfortable. The service was amazing. They serve their drinks in Mason jars which is always a hit with me. I recommend the raspberry lemonade. I had the classic burger. It was cooked perfectly and was a good size. My wife opted for the chicken wrap that she loved. Great experience.

This is a great local spot! Overall, we love coming here and are sure to be back.

We kept it pretty simple this time with a latte, cold brew, house coffee, cinnamon roll, eggs, and avocado. We loved that the latte and cold brew came in large mason jars! Great size for the price.

We sat on the patio which, even in the summer morning was hot but the misters help a lot! The covered courtyard area felt pretty good between 10-11am in August.

It’s a kid friendly place and has clean high chairs which we appreciate.

Overall, we believe you’ll enjoy your visit here!

Definitely not worth the price. We especially don’t recommend you come here with kids due to the long wait times.

To start off we were told only a 10 minute wait for a table, however it took and hour and forty-three minutes to get our food after we ordered it. Only to much later learn that the food was over priced and small.

Their big breakfast had the same amount of eggs and hash browns as the kids breakfast. The biscuit was about as big as a half-dollar Coin. They have a picture of fresh made cinnamon rolls, but they taste and look exactly like costco cinnamon rolls.

The turkey bacon avocado sandwich came with thin dollar store bought bologna slices, it wasn’t even close to turkey. Also the sweet potato fries served with it were soft/ squishy.

The mimosa was made with watered down store bought orange juice and a splash of champagne.

It felt like I was at a discount diner that was going out of business and trying to save money by getting their supplies from the dollar store. Not sure what mental gymnastics they were doing to try and justify a $18 bologna sandwich.

There are many breakfast options in Carefree/Cave Creek and this one serves up some really great food! From their home made cinnamon rolls and fluffy biscuits to the large mason jars of ice tea and lemonade. Everything was yummy! My 6yo enjoyed her pancakes, I loved the green chives on my biscuits and gravy, my 8yo almost made it through a big cinnamon roll, and my husband tried it all with the Mountaineer breakfast (ham, home fries with peppers, eggs, biscuit and gravy and a cinnamon roll). The patio is cute with its yellow umbrellas sitting between small local boutiques and set against the beauty of a Carefree backdrop.

Super great place to go. Family atmosphere but also a bar in the other half. Best of both worlds. Huevos rancheros, omelets & Crab Benedict – Homemade crab cake! All yummy!! Delicious tea. Very friendly staff. Plenty of parking. Light happy atmosphere.
Went again for lunch. Great blue cheese burger & chicken wrap. Same friendly service.
