Early bird gets the worm? Nah, at Black Iron Kitchen & Bar in Mountain Village, Colorado, the early bird gets a blissful breakfast and a dash of solitude. We may have been among the first patrons at the crack of dawn, but hey, who can blame us? With a menu that entices the senses and service as crisp as the morning air, an early start was inevitable!

I was hesitant to come here after looking at some of the Google reviews, but we were very impressed by this place. I don’t know if it is under new management or what, but our waitress was very knowledgeable and attentive, service was very fast and the food delicious, and a manager even stopped by our table to make sure everything was good. The cocktails here are unique and very well prepared, the elk chili came with a very unique and delicious sweet flat bread, the fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned (and I’m not a fish fan) and the beef tar tar was very flavorful. Full stars. Would come again. Don’t be scared off by the negative reviews.

The food here is delish! We have had breakfast and dinner here, both are great! The French toast and waffles are some of the best, and my wilderness bowl was perfection. The buttermilk biscuit was one of the best I’ve had. The service is friendly and accommodating… be patient as sometimes they are short staffed, but they make up for it with excellent dishes and polite service.

Fun ambiance and good service. The summer greens salad was very good as a shared appetizer! The bison tenderloin was excellent, cooked well (crispy on the outside and tender on the inside ), but could have used more side food. The spaghetti squash was tasty- a salad and squash mix!

We ate here over spring break with family friends and WOW! The food was INCREDIBLE. The staff was so accommodating for our party of 9 (5 children, 4 adults). We sat outdoors at one of their beautiful bartop fire-pit tables and enjoyed the lovely ambiance. Servers moved heaters close to us and even brought us all blankets to keep warm. Our waiter impressed us by remembering all 9 orders by memory too! But the best was the food – absolutely delicious! We all wanted to come back every single day for the rest of our trip! We hope to be back very soon.

Honestly, can look at my review history and I don’t leave negative reviews. However, hoping others can avoid our new years experience here. It was a price fixe menu at 165 dollars per person. Firstly, we waited for an hour and a half. Then they brought our entrees, then they brought our appetizer. I had ordered the oysters and they brought me two of the smallest oysters. I watched them serve four oysters to others later on in the night. Then for my fiancés steak they never asked the temperature and brought a rare extremely fatty strip. If you are going to charge like 75 dollars for the meal I get it. However the total bill was 400 dollars and we barely ate anything.

Loved the trout toast and herb salad- the mascarpone, roasted figs and carrots blended so well. They have a variety of wines to choose from. Great ambience and friendly staff 🙂

Revisited after a year and was not disappointed. The wagyu burger is fantastic, the fries changed from wedges to straight; which are better in my opinion. Service was really good with refilling our drinks and clearing the table. Really enjoyed the visit, would recommend and hope to visit again next year.

We had an ugly experience at Black Iron Kitchen last night. We arrived for an early dinner, no-one else in the restaurant so being busy is no excuse. We considered ordering a shared beef meal however the waiter became patronising when I asked for the meat to be cooked ‘medium well’. “Madam, it is dry aged beef…” he began so we quickly changed our minds and ordered individual meals. I had the baked spaghetti squash that arrived under a flurry of lettuce leaves and my husband ordered the individual serving of elk which was $50. I put my credit card on the table when we’d finished and the waiter quickly took it away and brought it back with the bill … payment already processed. I didn’t take too much notice and signed but my husband noticed the total and questioned it. We’d been charged $160 for his $50 elk. The waiter quickly disappeared and his supervisor in black suit arrived to tell us it was our fault. “Didn’t you notice that you had the large meal” he said. How could we notice a difference in size without seeing a comparison? We’d never dined there before. My husband replied with “Are you blaming us for this oversight? I ordered the elk and if there were two price points for elk the waiter should have clarified” and black suit man then began negotiating a refund of the difference stating that he couldn’t refund the whole difference. It was awkward, embarrassing and we agreed on a $60 refund rather than $110 which we deserved. Black suit man came back and said he couldn’t refund as the payment was already processed with the bank (before I saw the bill) and “a refund would take 5 days to process”. That was the most ridiculous response to restaurant error we’ve ever heard. I own a business, we understand how refunds work. We felt like we were being played and couldn’t get out of the dirty scenario fast enough. The food was OK but if you decide to eat here definitely don’t let them process the payment before you check the bill. So many other lovely options in the Mountain Village and we’re saddened that we chose to do business here.
