I went for my brother’s birthday brunch but a bothersome bewitching bout befell us.
The kids menu had a delightful selection of novelty pancakes, such as the sprinkle pancakes, which my brother enjoyed. However the pancakes on the adult menu (priced at 14$) had small portions and were overly sweet.
Our party of 7 ordered 2 kids meals 1 volcano 1 vegetarian omelet 2 waffles and 1 chocolate pancake. The food came out staggered in waves and no two peoples meals came out at the same time. 15 minutes after receiving the fist meal we were informed the waffle machine was shut off, this was a surprise because it was advertised as all day breakfast. We swapped the waffles for pancakes which didn’t bother us but is something to consider if order brunch. When the last meal came out (the omelet) it had been about an hour and half since we first ordered. We were also handed the check with the omelet which is odd for this kind of restaurant and unwelcoming.
Our waitress who was very kind and welcoming was trying her best and a breath of fresh air in our experience.
I don’t like leaving negative reviews and I think black bear dinner has a time and place. However if you are out to celebrate an event or looking to spend 13+ per person on breakfast I believe there are much better options close by!
The Atmosphere & Service:
The vibe in the dining room was sluggish, and honestly, there must be a lot of seniors frequenting this spot because the food is clearly seasoned for people whose taste buds have long since died.
The service didn’t help—our server sounded like an auctioneer, rattling through our order at light speed. It was hard to keep up, and that frantic energy clearly led to the mistakes that followed.
The Food Breakdown:
Chicken Fried Steak: Instead of a crisp, golden crust, it was completely mushy, as if it had been steamed rather than fried.
The Eggs: I ordered them over easy, but they arrived over medium. There’s nothing worse than wanting a runny yolk and getting a solid center.
The Sides: The hash browns were pale and undercooked. Meanwhile, the Corned Beef Hash was bizarre—it tasted like someone chopped up old beef jerky and tossed it into a pile of Potatoes O’Brien.
The Gravy: Completely flavorless. It was essentially thickened water with zero seasoning.
The Drinks:
Even the coffee was a letdown. It was so watered down I could practically see the bottom of the mug through the brew.
Bottom Line: Between the auction-style service and the lack of flavor or quality control, this was a total waste of a breakfast outing. If you actually enjoy tasting your food, stay away.
As for the food, while it was good, it didn’t quite exceed expectations. The pancakes and waffles were tasty, but they didn’t offer any unique or standout flavors. In essence, they were your typical breakfast staples. However, despite this, the overall dining experience was pleasant and satisfying. The combination of great service and a cozy atmosphere made for a memorable visit. If you’re looking for a reliable spot for classic breakfast dishes in a charming setting, Black Bear Diner is definitely worth a visit.
Food was very consistent with what we typically see from Black Bear. Tasted good and Food came out in a reasonable amount of time.
Our server was very inattentive and didn’t fulfill requests for drink refills.
More detail:
I took my wife and daughters to Black Bear Diner for Valentines Day because my oldest absolutely loves it. When we walked in, we were seated quickly and our drink order was brought out. Our server, who I believe was a manager, said she would be back in a minute to take our order. We didn’t see her for 15 minutes. My kids were hungry, employees were sitting around, and I was frustrated. I finally looked over at the employees that were just standing there and they definitely saw me looking and our server quickly came over and said, sorry that was more than a minute. She took our order and I asked for a refill on my water. Our food came out in reasonable time, but it wasn’t our server who brought it out. We didn’t see our server again until our food was gone and I had to ask again for a refill when she brought the check.
I’ve worked in the food service industry several times throughout my life. I understand that things can get busy for a manager, but the restaurant was nearly dead. Employees were just standing and talking. The restaurant was a mess. I was very disappointed with our service and the cleanliness of the restaurant. The credit that I will always give to Black Bear Diner is that the food is always consistent. Tasted good, dishes looked clean, and even though the restaurant was dirty, it is still a welcoming atmosphere for families.
I know you can do better Black Bear, Orem! I’ll come back again, but please be more attentive to your patrons!
