I have travelled the world extensively over 40 years. I ate at all restaurants ranging from pop & mom’s to Michelin three stars. This is my honest review of the restaurant Bistrot du Lion d’Or in Carouge, canton of Geneva, Switzerland (not to be mistaken with Lion d’Or restaurant in Cologny).

We had the pleasure of dining here as a group of around a dozen people and were welcomed in a private room located on the lower floor — a perfect space for a more intimate or discreet gathering. The service throughout the evening was truly impeccable: attentive, professional, and thoughtful without ever being intrusive.

The menu featured refined, traditional cuisine made with top-quality local ingredients and executed with real finesse. We began with a pithivier of quail, foie gras, and artichoke — rich and flavorful, with a beautifully balanced sauce and excellent textures. This was followed by a two-style preparation of poultry from Troinex (a village in the Geneva region), served with Valais asparagus, fondant potatoes, and chanterelles. A classic dish, but prepared with real mastery and attention to detail.

Dessert was a refreshing seasonal composition built around Gariguette strawberries, tangy cream, granola, and a fragrant herb sorbet — light, elegant, and perfectly suited to end the meal.

Altogether, the meal fully lived up to the restaurant’s Bib Gourmand distinction and its 14-point rating in Gault & Millau. This is a gem worth seeking out for a high-quality lunch or dinner. The private room was particularly appreciated for the level of discretion it offered, which suited our gathering of professionals and public-sector guests.

Highly recommended for both the cuisine and the quality of hospitality.

An absolute cozy and historic bistro in the heart of carouge. We had a very warm welcoming and enjoyed every detail. We were lucky to try the delicious Christmas menu with a stunning presentation of every single dish. When you are from Geneva or just here for a a weekend you definitely need to have them on your list! (it was so worth it coming all the way from Lausanne) Always pretty booked so make sure to plan in advance. We are looking forward to our next visit.

Lovely terrace behind the restaurant. Not an extensive menu, but what they offer is good enough and well-prepared. The staff is attentive and provide good service.

Excellent food, particularly the fera and sea bass. The staff were friendly and attentive. The terrace was really cozy and perfectly quiet for those who don’t like a loud restaurant. We’ll be back!

We travelled here and dined with colleagues here for a farewell dinner of one of our colleagues. Getting a table was fairly easier than other places in Geneva to be honest.

The restuarant has a couple of good food options to choose from, service was good with excellent wine options and they made sure we have a good time at the restuarant.

It was a good experience but not a great experience. I hope to come back here and increase the rating from 3.0 to 4 and higher but this overall experience was just okay could have been better.

Came here because of good reviews. We had duck as main course. The staff gave us the French menu when we arrived even though we spoke English with him. Later for dessert he gave us the English menu. The duck was shortly presented to us after it was taken out of the oven. It smelled really good but later on the plate the meat somehow lost the aroma it had before . The duck meat was unfortunately a bit tough and both our desserts were ordinary. I would also prefer a bit of vegetables on our main dish.
