Surprisingly excellent Thai spot in Chevy Chase, with a limited but happily opinionated menu with some classic items as well as street food fare. We enjoyed the Beef massaman (
Slow-cooked beef in Massaman curry with potatoes, onions, and peanuts); it was a warm, nourishing comfort curry. Alongside the Baa Mee (
egg noodle, five spice roasted chicken, bok-choy, fried garlic,
peanuts, spring onion, and cilantro), it was excellent combination of flavorful noodles and a rich creamy curry. Service was excellent and the space was modern and vibrant. Acoustics were poor however, as the amplified din made it very difficult to carry on a conversation. Really the only note for the restaurant.

Really great new Thai place. Succulent duck confit surrounded by curry. Nice spice, pineapple not too harsh. Crowded interior because of how popular they are. If they keep doing well maybe they should expand!

SO GOOD! The grilled oysters. Chef’s kiss! The white curry. Chef’s kiss. And I do not like curry in general. Midnight Fried Rice. Thankfully this was not spicy but my friend tried the sauce and it was HOT but he gave it so many thumbs up. Highly recommend the homemade ice cream. SO GOOD! The staff were friendly and knew the menu. I watched them work a bit and helped each other out with each other’s trays.

If you’re going to call yourself a Thai restaurant, at least pretend. Not a single “sawadee kap,” not even eye contact. Just a cold, generic dining room that looks like it was ordered straight from the “neutral café starter pack” catalog. Zero Thai energy. Zero character. Zero effort.
We sat there for 15 minutes like invisible ghosts. No greeting. No water. No acknowledgment. Meanwhile, tables that walked in after us were already being welcomed and served. Watching servers enthusiastically chat with other guests while completely ignoring us was almost impressive in its audacity.
After 15 minutes, we left. And judging by the plates coming out of the kitchen, we didn’t miss much. What passed by looked like college dorm ramen drowned in coconut milk and marketed as cuisine. If that’s the standard, the wait may have been the most flavorful part of the experience.
One chance to make a first impression, and BirdSong fumbled it spectacularly.

Birdsong was a real surprise. Very special Thai food with excellent flavor and spice. It captures the flavors of street food and home cooking but with the care of the best restaurants. I plan to taste my way through the menu on many frequent visits.

The food is incredibly creative and packed with flavor and depth. Every dish bursts with bold, layered tastes that feel fresh and innovative, not your standard takeout. I especially loved how they serve spice on the side, it lets you customize the heat to your liking without overwhelming the delicate flavors.

First time patron of Birdsong and all I can say is wow oh wow – this restaurant did not disappoint! The menu was innovative, the cocktails and food were beautifully crafted/plated, and every dish my party tried was delicious, although the shrimp dish was certainly a fav. Aside from the wonderful food, the ambiance was lovely and the entire staff was friendly and attentive, making for an exceptional overall experience. Can’t wait for my next visit!!
