Was so looking forward for this restaurant booking since it was recommended and the vibes felt like it would be very much me! But boy were we in for a rough ride.

Service was a let down. Very slow and not present at all. Also, when she cleared the food, she swept the parmesan to the side of the table where i place my jacket :’)

Food came out very slow. First, the monkfish appetizer. The aioli was nice and it was crisp. But the monkfish was quite stringy. Not sure if its supposed to to taste like that. Then came the tartar which was the most acidic tartar ive ever had that we had to complain. The chef said it was exactly how he usually makes it. *shrugs* make of it what you will

Credit where its due, the t bone steak was well cooked and salted nicely. That said, i know it takes a long time to rest a big cut of meat. But it could keep warm if the plate was hot or if the sauce was warmer. The fries came nice and crisp though!

Didn’t bother to stay for dessert like we originally planned. Wine we ordered was nice.

But yeah, overall shamefully disappointing. Other couples next to our table also struggled with pacing and waiting for their food. At the end, it was a relief for both parties when we walked out the door.

Just wonderful food. Changing menu so you really take your chances. But this is fresh ingredients beautifully cooked. Of note were:
Steak tartare (my go-to), delicious breaded monkfish, sumptuous lemon sole and a delicious cataplana laden with succulent skate, mussels and clams. There is steak on offer but we were just so happy with the fish (btw I love meat too!).

We had a really nice dinner here – there were some dishes I hadn’t tried and it was nice to try some different things. Food was tasty and staff were nice to us. The lamb was probably my favourite, we even ate the fat.

One thing I wish I had known was that the monkfish was breaded from the menu, as I’m not a huge fan of breaded/battered fish – but my boyfriend who never eats fish tried a bit and then ate half of it! Couldn’t believe it!

Another little point – We were slightly confused when we first arrived as to why we were sat next to another table of two & a baby, when the whole restaurant was free at this point, we asked to be moved and all was well. Just was a very close table in a quiet setting and very close together, felt rather awkward and could really hear each other’s conversations .

This place is brilliant. They have a changing menu which can cause some apprehension for people who are food fussy, but they do such a varied selection that I’m sure there will be something on for everyone.

The staff are super friendly, the atmosphere is chill and the food is incredibly delicious. Because everything is made fresh to order it can take a while, especially if like us you decide to order three quarters of the menu!

I would recommend booking ahead if you have the option.

We will definitely be returning to this spot!

Astoundingly bad, absolutely stunning, I don’t rightly know what happened. Let’s begin with the beginning.

Right off from the start things were odd. We were barely welcomed, questioned about our reservation in a mostly empty restaurant. We got questioned on drinks before even properly looking at the menu. Wine was good, though.

We got the monkfish and tartar + steak, fries, salad and bread. Bread came prebuttered and also prestaled – who wants a crusty bread without any crust left? Monkfish was almost inedibly stringy and chewy, not that it had any flavour to entice chewing.

Tartar was one of the worst I’ve ever had the distinct displeasure of dining on. The meat was abyssmally shredded and coated with such an industrial quality of vinegar that it was entirely inedible. Four bites, three for curiosity and increasing bemusement.

Steak arrived almost cold, even if the cook was otherwise good – I would respect a little bit more rendering. It wasn’t a particularly amazing steak, same could be said for the fries. The salad seemed to be mostly for the benefit of instagram; some of the more bitter greens increased an already bitter taste in my mouth.

The farce really reached a peak as we complained about the inedible tartar – the waitresses response was ”Ok”, without as much as a sorry. The chef came out to defend it, too, but no sorries and defending the indefendable is not an honoured quest.

Neither did we ever feel like honoured guests. Curt is a descriptive word of the service. Between the unwelcoming feel, the great tartar argument, and a general tardy feeling, the whole dinner felt more like a comedy than a meal. And not a funny one.

We had to ask for the aformenetioned tartar to be taken off our bill. Mate, the uneaten plate might have been a hint. In fact, most of the meal was uneaten at the end of it.

I wish success to all small businesses, and I don’t want to put anyone down, but this was really a bad night, I think for everyone involved. I for sure hated to fork out the money, I hated the food, I hated the service, and most of all I hated the missed opportunity here.

Fantastic dinner with 5* food, drinks, service & atmosphere. We tried a bit of almost everything and each bite was a pleasure – inventive but satisfying, expert home cooking that was indulgent in the very best way. Would recommend to anyone and everyone. Wines were delicious and service was super friendly and attentive. Restaurant is really cosy, too, and the staff took every care to accommodate our requests. We all agreed it was a big success. Thanks so much for a lovely pre-birthday meal! We’ll be back!X

Went to Big Counter and it was one of those places that I’ve walked by so many times and had no idea what they did. It’s got a smallish menu that changes up quite often.

600g Steak, £60
They didn’t ask how we wanted it cooked, and I respect it tbh – it came out exactly as it should be: pink and tender. Perfect. The peppercorn sauce was rich but well balanced. There was a bit of marbling on the bottom end, which added some tough parts but nothing too bad. Overall, it was incredible.

Salad, £9
This came absolutely buried under parmesan – you know that moment when a waiter keeps grating, and you forget to say “when”? Well it felt like that.

Chips, £5
Crisp, well-seasoned and a decent sized portion, a great accompaniment to the steak and peppercorn sauce.

Mussels in Café de Paris Butter, £12
Wow. Just wow. This was my first time trying mussels in this style, and it was absolutely life-changing. I’m used to seeing white wine or garlic butter, but the richness of the café de Paris butter added so much depth and flavour. A definite highlight of the meal.

I’ll definitely be back when they switch up the menu again – this was a special night!

The best dinner we had in Glasgow. Such a gem of a restaurant, I wanted to try everything on the menu (which changes daily) and everything was superb. Highlights for me were the potatoes with cod roe (what an incredible invention) and the salad (a thing of pure joy).
Thank you so much for all the friendly staff and preempting our every need. I can’t wait to come back.
