We are a Chef-driven restaurant. This phrase is used often, so what do we mean when we use that here at Besharam? The food curated by Chef Heena is a reflection and homage to her journey and struggles that brought her here. Often when food from other cultures has a twist on it, it is referred to as fusion. We openly reject that description and do not identify as a fusion restaurant. Rather than dilute our food for certain palates, each dish reflects a story, an experience, a place (or several) from Mumbai, to the UK, to the Bay Area. It is her mother’s kitchen and Mumbai streets. It is California produce and the foods she invented for her children’s immigrant lives. It is techniques she has acquired with spices that she brings with her.
Gujarati classics & modern Indian dishes in lively quarters with bold murals & communal tables.

The service is great, with the right amount of both follow-up and space. Its a little bit pricey but honestly, some of the uniqueness is worth it. The vibe is also very new yet old at the same time, and I found myself picking out plenty of pieces of decor that I know my grandma has, or that I know we used growing up which was a nice touch. Plus, plenty of parking.
Now the food.
They have a decent wine selection and we had a few cocktails that were very tasty but back to the food.
The drunken pani puri is a refreshing start and the puris were SO crunchy! I also added on the candy Karela which somehow is my dad’s favorite vegetable and if it was made like this growing up, I also would agree, another winner.
We also had the Vindaloo Koftas, Dal Makhani, Maska Paneer and a cheesy garlic naan. Everything was very tasty and had a slightly different approach to dishes you’ve eaten before.
I know the menu changes so I cannot wait to go back and try more food that as a fellow Gujju, brings back memories and also let’s me make new ones!
Masala mushroom to begin was a bomb! Loved every bit of it.
The khadi-bhindi, again creative but the raw garlic in there overpowered the dish to an extent we hardly ate any of it.
Definitely have had softer/smoother malai koftas.
I personally loved all the dishes except Rigan No Oro, which tasted a bit salty and sour for my preference. But overall, the food was outstanding, especially their chutneys! I enjoyed it so much that I even left a personal note for the chef. Highly recommend this place and will definitely be back to try more!
Every dish feels like a memory brought to life, but with an unexpected spin. The flavors are familiar yet exciting, from beautifully spiced snacks to home-style classics with a fresh, modern take. Whether it’s a playful version of a childhood favorite or a completely rethought regional dish, the chef finds a way to make each bite feel both comforting and new.
Gujarati food has never seen this kind of creativity. If you’re looking for food that’s packed with heart, heritage, and a little bit of adventure, this is the place to be.
It is very easy to spend $50+ per person if you order a drink as well. Food was no doubts great and only vegetarian menu available for lunch which was a huge bonus for us
