I’ve been enjoying Bertha’s since I was a young kid holding on to my Grandma’s pocket. This southern comfort food is top tier, always fresh, never a miss, and if you want fush you better speak up. I wish I had pics of the food to share, but I only pause long enough to pray before I dig in lol. My personal favorite is the okra soup with meat, and a nice square of cornbread. G’on down there to get a complementary Chilly Bear and a hearty meal.

This is a hidden gem in North Charleston. I got the crab balls with the seafood rice it came with cornbread. I wish the person behind the counter would have told me that the platter was the same price. But I guess it was fine that I didn’t get the platter because my mom and aunt said the vegetables were out of can. I liked how we given a mini cup of frozen koolaid because of the heat. That was nice. The crab balls, seafood rice and cornbread were good. The prices are good.

Bertha’s Kitchen is the definition of true Southern cooking done right. This is the kind of place where the food tells a story—flavors passed down through generations, cooked with patience, pride, and a whole lot of soul.

Every dish tastes like home: rich, comforting, deeply seasoned, and unapologetically authentic. There’s no pretense here—just honest Southern food made the way it’s always been made, the way it should be made.

The service matches the food: warm, welcoming, and genuine. Eating at Bertha’s Kitchen feels less like dining out and more like being invited into someone’s home. It’s not just a meal, it’s a cultural experience—and one you don’t forget. A true Southern treasure

I was down in Charleston for the first time for a visit from North Carolina and Bertha’s was recommended by a family member from there. I loved my shrimp. It was cooked just right and those shrimp were nothing small either. My food was hot and very full filling. will come back the next time I am in town.

Best value plate in Charleston! I got the special for the day, which was baked chicken with lima beans over rice and it took me back to my childhood! I also got a fish sandwich and did not expect three fillets to be laid between two slices of bread. Everything was seasoned to perfection, and the service was over the top! Everybody working hard, it’s lovely to see this business thrive

Great experience at Bertha’s kitchen! From the minutes you walk in you know you are in a family establishment. Loved the pictures throughout. You know you will feel the love in the food as well. Staff was helpful and pleasant. We were even given Kool aid icee while waiting. The chicken and Mac and cheese were my favorites. Cornbread was good too. We will be back. ❤️

Bertha’s Kitchen: A Must-Visit for Soul Food Lovers

Atmosphere:

The restaurant had a cozy and quaint atmosphere, perfect for a casual meal with friends or family.

Food:

We opted for the daily special, which included white rice, beans, and our choice of fried or baked chicken. We substituted the beans for collard greens and maccaroni and cheese. Every dish was very flavorful and very well portioned! Also, the daily specials were only $6.75 each before substitutions!

Service:

The staff was incredibly polite and attentive. They gave us several recommendations for our first time and made sure we had everything we needed.

Memorable Experience:

The line around the building 15 minutes before they opened was a testament to the popularity of this place. It was definitely worth the wait!

Overall Impression:

Bertha’s Kitchen is a great place to experience authentic soul food in a warm and inviting atmosphere. The daily specials are a great value, and the food is consistently delicious. I highly recommend it!

Great establishment. Friendly staff. And the icing, free icey pops. The food is like your grandma’s. Tasteful and takes you back when you felt the warm embrace of a home-cooked meal from grandma’s.

Very good low country soul food but don’t expect anything fancy. Paper plates and styrofoam with plastic forks and spoons. Okra stew, BBQ ribs, collards and cornbread. Stand in line with cafeteria type service. Everyone including other customers is very friendly and welcoming.

So I tried this place and was excited. Dont go if you dont have time to wait. The line seems to always be long. I got the fried chicken red rice string beans and MAC. It came with cornbread. The red rice waa great! The chicken wasn’t really seasoned well and the MAC seemed to be really soft almost like mush. The cornbread was really dry also. The string beans were good though! While I was disappointed im willing to trt it again and get something different. Also the parking is stressful and almost made me leave. Its pretty ridiculous. The people are nice but for the price i expected at least the fried chicken to be good. Ill try again though but not anytime soon.
