It was sadly disappointing. The prices were really crazy high! I got a starter of chopped liver. It was two small scoops with a piece of onion and two slices of bread for $15. It tasted nice, but wow! My mom’s brisket was SO dry. It looked like it had been sitting all day. She couldn’t even soak it in gravy and chew it. The fried chicken was tasty, but dry like leather.
They were kind enough to give my mom a half sandwich, which was very nice of them.
The sandwiches looked delicious, which is why I gave it two stars. But when does a sandwich cost $25? Oh, and if you want pickles, that’s $1.50. I have never been charged for pickles in a deli in my life!
One server was generally nice, but she made us feel like we were bothering her. Maybe we were? Idk, but we couldn’t wait to leave. We won’t be going back unless they make some major changes. $1.50 for pickles??
The menu includes tasty breakfast, lunch & dinner choices, so anytime of day you’re hungry, you can get something good to eat, here.
We came in at lunch-time & split a Benjie’s Special, With Corned Beef, instead of Pastrami. This comes with choice of Fries, or Potato Salad. We added a Side of Onion Rings, which were hot & super crispy. The golden brown rings came with a container Ranch Dressing, to dunk them in.
Our sandwich was a Goliath, no other way to put it! Cradled lovingly between 2 flavorful slices of Rye bread, was Benjie’s delicious Corned Beef,
piled nearly to the sky. *(Slight exaggeration) smirk
Our server was friendly, & attentive, taking our order, refilling my Iced Tea glass, & getting our check, plus To Go Box, without us having to ask.
They sell all sorts of baked goodies here, as well as their quality cold cuts, in row of glass cases, up front. You may also buy one of the much talked about NY Black & White Cookies here, which are humungous.
Benjie’s interior walls were decorated festively, in a cute Halloween theme, when we visited, on 10/29/25.
I love this place, which has been in business, for 68 years!
The restaurant felt like a proper classic diner, which we loved. The attacked little dark bar was a surprise but we loved that too.
The service was excellent, and they have a nearby bar called Ave 76 next door, which was very charming. The food was absolutely delicious, and the portions are quite generous— the sandwich platter was enough for both of us. They don’t skimp on the meats; the matzo ball looked a bit dense but was surprisingly light, and the knish was flavorful. The gravy wasn’t bad either, and I ended up taking some home to make poutine with the fries!
I rate their pastrami below:
Ugly Drum: 10/10
Benjies: 7.5/10
Philippe: 6/10
The Hat: 5/10
I do wish the chef cut the meat thicker—the slices of meat here were too thin for my taste—and it would be great if they included hot mustard sauce with the sandwich. I haven’t tried their other sandwiches yet, but the atmosphere is great, there’s plenty of seating, and a big parking lot. Definitely come back to tried other sandwiches
