What has been an annual birthday tradition for over 30 years completely missed the mark this year.
We had reservations for five on February 25 and arrived on time, only to be asked to wait 15 minutes despite the restaurant not appearing overly busy. From the start, the staff seemed overwhelmed. Our server was running around frantically, clearly assigned too many tables for the number of staff available. A second person, who we assumed was a manager, had to step in just to take our food order.
Then came the biggest disappointment: the chef experience. The chef appeared extremely inexperienced, almost as if it were his first night behind the grill. He seemed uncomfortable handling the knives, had zero personality or showmanship, and most concerning, struggled with the actual cooking.
As longtime guests, we have favorite dishes and certain expectations. The scallops, once a highlight, were half the size we remember and had a noticeably fishy taste. The filet mignon was overcooked and tough. The shrimp appetizer was rubbery. Even the fried rice, usually a can’t-miss staple, was greasy, bland, and lacking any real flavor.
All five of us agreed our meals were about a 4 out of 10 at best.
When you combine high prices, poor service, and tasteless food, it makes for a deeply disappointing experience. After more than three decades of celebrating here, this visit felt nothing like the Benihana we’ve come to love.
We stayed there for a total of 2.5 hours with the slowest service possible. When we first arrive the seats and the grill were both covered in filth and old food from prior guest.
We ended up moving seats but it remained to be a very dirty dining experience. For example, the plates that was exposed to prior patrons was being placed on the grill table.
For those wondering why I stayed, i’m visiting and i prayed for God to form a hedge of protection over my digestive system.
I could say more but this place needs a visit to the health department to just to get my point across.
I found the food spicier than others. Besides that, it wasn’t the worst or the best. The chef was professional but not as talkative. Normal onion volcano and chopping. The food I took home reheated good.
Parking lot is a little tighter especially if you need handicap space. We enjoyed it and glad we came but most agreed with the prices it is for special events not regular dinning out.
Steak i had was excellent
Onion soup was also excellent.
Staff was friendly and nice, just nor so good
My perspective was a little different. I’ve worked in hospitality and for a very long time. People should still be aware of the term secret shoppers. Especially with apps like these in the world now! My favorite boss used to say “Every Guest Every Time”!!!! This means you give EVERYONE 5star service every time you take care of your Guests.
That being said we were a party of 6 who were seated with 2 extra people. One of them requested a certain chef stating that this chef was the BEST! Well for them he was. Starting with the rice I ordered was shrimp rice with NO veggies. He cooked the shrimp and chicken then prepared the 2 ladies rice with veggies. Not only did I end up with some veggies in the rice but onions leave a taste that I didn’t want combined with the flavor of my other food. Not to mention that my husband, mother-in-law and brother-in-law HATE onions. Probably should have cooked that in the other order Chef Will that was a rookie mistake! Did I mention I’ve worked at an Ichiban in Canton before? Oh I didn’t tell you that Chef Will, I just let you do your thing. So then he gave my shrimp away to the other lady. Why didn’t I say something? Well our server wasn’t really on her game either or else I would’ve. So to not ruin everyone else’s time I didn’t say anything. Then he overcooked our lobster because he was busy making sure these ladies were taken care of. Now this isn’t the fault of these ladies they were just there to eat too. So Chef Will you’re not as great as you think. Also I’m a bit heavier then most, I’ve had some health issues since Cancer and menopause there was no need to make sure I had an ample amount of zucchini I’m losing weight all on my own but thank you for looking out.
Next to the server you should learn about the 2/3 rule on refills. First refill you automatically bring when you guest has a glass that has 1/3 left in it.
The sushi was OUTSTANDING!!! Good soup. The ice cream and sherbet were good too. I’ve never had green tea ice cream and I recommend trying it. The chocolate was the best. Great sherbet!!!
Strange rule there is special apps only in the bar/lounge.
Instead of the main dining room and hibachi table with a full blown meal plus some discounted apps, we chose the lounge for apps.
That rule cost the restaurant a lot of money and saved me a bundle.
As you can see, the presentation/plating was very unappealing and the California rolls were minced crab. Lazy.
The french fries I will say were the best, crispy and hot. The wagyu ‘burger ‘ was delicious but actually a slider.
And the 3 year old birthday boy got his ice cream with candle just thrown down on the table with no typical birthday song.
A true disappointing evening.
