We are proud to be America’s oldest, continuously operating, tavern since 1795. The Bell in Hand is the perfect place to grab raw oysters, lobster rolls, clam chowder, fish and chips, burgers and salads. Come to the bar for inspired seasonal cocktails or local and craft beers, then stick around as the dining room and bar transforms into a late night party where new and old friends meet to listen to live music and dance to the DJ as well.
Local beers on tap, pub grub & live-music nights draw a crowd to this historic bar.

Espresso martini, house beer, clam chowder and lobster grilled cheese, so good! Every thing tasted great! Service was good and we went on a week day night so it wasnt super packed. Cool spot!

Was on the look to a late night restaurant and made this one my choice. Server was very sceptics despite a Saturday night very busy pub
We’ve ordered local food, the service was fast and prices affordable, very loud and hard to talk but as per my understanding this is more like a pub serving food and being Saturday night close to midnight…
We had a great dinner overall

The Bell In Hand
At first, I thought it was going to be a tourist-themed pub — I was wrong. The front bar has a real local feel, and when you walk through to the back there’s an amazing live-music space, plus even more dancing upstairs.
The food was great, classic bar favorites — the lobster roll and the sliders were especially good.
Shoutout to Jojo at the door for making us feel so welcome, and to Reagan behind the bar, who was fantastic. This place quickly became our HQ.

Got a seat right away, staff was super friendly right out of the gate. Our server was super polite and the food came out faster than I expected. We got the fish and chips and the crab cake both were excellent. The Bell In Hand Sesaonal Ale was amazing, just wished I ordered the larger one. Highly highly recommend. The atmosphere was chill and quiet everyone just enjoying their time with who they were there with.

Tried the ‘Bell in hand ale’. Good flavors of dark chocolate. It is such a historic place.
Take a moment to read the historical marker outside the door!
The only time to doors have closed was during the prohibition!
If you like beer or history, you have to check it out!

Local lore (and a plaque) state that this is the oldest, continuously operated tavern since it was opened in 1795. It is a good sized tavern with plenty of windows so you can enjoy a breeze while you people watch, have a brew, and eat.
I had the quesadilla which had a great crisp on the tortilla and the roasted peppers were great. If there is anything I can say negatively it is that the chicken was a tad bland. Overall I gave it a solid 4 stars.
The Bell in Hand Ale was nice and thick for an ale. Old school. The flavor profile was pleasant and refreshing.
I recommend this place for a bit of history, a good drink, and good food.

Ended up here because the wait for union oyster house was too long, and we’re glad we did. The food was delicious and the service was friendly. One of the best lobster rolls we had in Boston. Oysters were pretty good too. We sat outside and had a great time.

I’ve always wanted to stop in and finally did. Its claims to be the country’s oldest continously operated tavern. Walking felt like and old tyme bar as it definitely had a bit of a colonial feel to it. It has a small menu. I got the fish and chips on the bar tenders recommendation. It did not disappoint, though the portion was on the small side. But honestly, I went there for the history. I did see someone order the pretzels as an app. Those did look spectacular! All and all, its worth a visit if you are in the area.

Good place to grab dinner or a drink. Food was really great, we ordered the wings and the fish and chips- really crispy with great breading. we sat in the right side near the larger window room, mostly good volume level. Service was subpar, waitress seemed more interested in socializing with some dudes and flirting with the two older guests than with my table and the girl beside us. Other than that good experience, nice place with interesting history.
