The days start early in Downeast Maine. If you swing by Clark Point Road in Southwest Harbor today, you’ll experience a lot to the same things that you would’ve have seen more than 80 years ago – fishermen splicing lines, tying off boats and hauling in nets and traps full of the freshest seafood around. You’ll see what it takes to be a Mainer who makes a living on the water. This sense of hard work and tradition is apparent in everything we do – at Beal’s, only the freshest will do. In 1969, the third generation of Beals opened a Maine seafood restaurant at the end of the pier. The restaurant’s vision remains the same today as it was then – serve up the freshest seafood to customers, at the doorstep of the working waterfront!
Relaxed waterfront venue for lobsters, clams & fried seafood platters, plus sandwiches & desserts.

We had just arrived in Bar Harbor and after running up to Cadillac Mtn, we cruised through town. Thought it was very touristy and wasn’t excited about any of the restaurants we saw. Several of the Lobster shacks were closed for the season. Did some research on places outside of town and stumbled on Beal’s. Asked our receptionist at the Little Fig about Beal’s and the guy at the desk said he grew up on that area and loved Beal’s. Took the beautiful drive (30 minutes) over to the SW Harbor and pulled right up to the restaurant. It is located right beside the Coast Guard Station so kind of cool.
We walked in and were a little overwhelmed by the menu. Everything looked good but my pledge for the trip was eat lobster for every meal. Ordered the large live lobster and all the fixings. Wife got a lobster roll. We sat out on the dock/deck which was closed off with canvas to keep the weather out. We could see through some of the clear plastic and were looking right into a beautiful sunset. We were there somewhat early and it wasn’t very crowded so we were a little concerned but after we ordered it filled up quick. Mostly with people who were local or knew about the place.
Can’t say enough about the place. Great service. Really cool setting. Food was outstanding. IPAs were fantastic. Don’t think I’d even consider trying another spot if I returned.
This is an order at the counter and food is brought to your table kind of place. Although, I have seen that there is a dining room you can select for table service as well, but that was not our experience. We spent a few minutes taking in the menu and specials and chatting with employees and asking a few questions. They were all very pleasant.
We ordered the fried shrimp appetizer, the Buttermilk fried chicken with watermelon pico de gallo special, and a Connecticut style lobster roll with fries. Typical prices for the area – around $80 with tax before tip.
We were seated outside overlooking the water and had a lovely view while waiting for our food. I suggest trying to get a table that allows for the scenery; it really added to our experience.
Our food was absolutely incredible! The fried shrimp were crispy and the shrimp was well cooked and not rubbery at all. Our lobster roll was one of the best we had over the course of our vacation. It was fairly well filled and very yummy. The unexpected star was the fried chicken sandwich. I admit I had never had watermelon pico prior and we enjoyed it so much that now we make it at home! The chicken was exactly how I like it – thin, crispy, and still juicy.
Overall, this dinner was really really good and I highly recommend trying this plzce for yourself.
The service was outstanding from the guy at the lobster tank to the wait staff and bussers, everyone was super friendly and genuinely cared about the experience. The atmosphere almost can’t be beat. You’re literally on the pier. Great views of the harbor and sunset. Unfortunately the food wasn’t the best. We had a whole boiled lobster meal and a lobster roll. The roll was ok. It was over soaked with butter so the bread was soggy. The onion rings were cold. The lobster was not the best. It was filled with water which made eating it on the little paper plate they serve it in a mess. The corn on the cob was disgusting. The cole slaw was flavorless. The cornbread was good, but sweet which I know isn’t for everyone. Service and atmosphere made up for the food but if you’re looking for a great lobster pound meal, I found Thurstons to be much better.
