Loved the food at Basho, the sushi was really fresh, the tuna tartar was very tasty. The beef tartar was devine, it was my first time trying a asian inspired beef tartar and I really enjoyed it, something id go back for. The steak is definitely a star on the menu, this coming from a girl who’s not really a steak girl. It was soooooo good, the sauce and the mushrooms were such a good marriage. Would return 🙂

Amazing dinner at Basho! This place is really incredible. From the atmosphere walking in, to the relaxing vibe, and a 10/10 dinner.
We had the loveliest waitress, who was very personable and took the time to chat with us.
The food is well thought out and with very creative taste combinations.
Everything from the starter salad to the mains and the dessert was top quality.
I highly recommend checking out Basho. Reserving a table is a good idea, as it’s not a big place.

Dishes pictured: the ‘surf-n-turf’ beef tenderloin and scallops with crispy onion rings starter, lamb shanks with ratatouille main course, and chocolate moose dessert.

My first time here & will definitely have to check out again. Servers were , the girls were super nice, explained everything in detail & were super accommodating for tastes/restrictions. The bar is beautiful & was still able to have a cozy dinner with friends while the place was packed. The sushi is really beautiful plated & innovative. Would recommend ✅✅✅

To start, I normally don’t post reviews and I have a very high tolerance for bad service at a restaurant. Last night was probably the worst service I’ve ever had… and we even knew going in that the service can be slow, servers have been intoxicated when friends have went previously etc, but was willing to put it aside for the supposedly great food. The jist of it is we had discussed my partner’s shellfish allergy TWICE with our server (who did seem to be under the influence of something). The first time I found the server to be extremely dismissive, basically saying if anything happens it happens. After the second discussion, we felt a bit better as we were reassured our table would be flagged with the allergen in the kitchen and measures would be taken to avoid it. Then he accidentally rang in a shellfish basket to our table (we did not order this.. obviously) and the servers bumbled around clearly confused when we said we hadn’t ordered it. They asked us what we had ordered. When our appetizers promptly arrived I asked again if our table was marked with this allergen, because I had a suspicion some wires got crossed, and it was like the first time they were hearing it. At that point we were told the fries just served to us were also fried in the same basket as shellfish, which is fine, these things are unavoidable sometimes, but would’ve been super nice to know before ordering it. I asked for the bill because I was uncomfortable with how disorganized and careless they seemed to be about the allergy. We had only had drinks so they comped those. Then a lady came out and was much more understanding of the shellfish allergy, having one herself, and reassured us she would ring in my partners (non fish) main herself and ensure if it cooked in a separate pan etc if we decided to stay. At this point it was an hour and a half since we arrived, we were hungry, it was my birthday, too late to get in anywhere else, so we stayed. The food was mid for what it is -its hard to say though because my appetite was gone anyway after how careless our original server was. Again, we’re easy-going people. Going out to eat with an allergen is always a risk, and we understand cross contamination is always possible. But it was the slow service, dismissive attitude and then accidentally trying to serve us a basket full of the allergen that was crazy to me. We’ve eaten at sushi restaurants where shellfish is everywhere and it hasn’t been an issue. But at Basho it felt like the bare minimum of flagging the allergen wasn’t even met … after asking about it several times. So, we won’t be returning, and at this price point there are several other restaurants that have much better service and food anyway.

This was our first time visiting Basho. We frequently visit St. John’s and very much enjoy the restaurant/food scene in town. This was one of my favourite meals I’ve had ever! The filet mignon was the best steak I’ve had in St. John’s hands down, the flavour was amazing and it was cooked perfectly. My husband had the special of the night which was the seafood steamer, which was mussels, scallops and shrimp in a Cajun cream sauce.. unreal!! He also had the spicy scallop roll which was so fresh and tasty. I can’t wait to visit again!

I gave this place four stars for two reasons:
The tablecloth was ripped.
They were out of sake.
Food: amazing
Service: great

Not sure why the reviews are so high here because our dinner was absolutely terrible. For starters, what kind of fine dining restaurant uses a QR code for their menu? We were served watery martinis with ice cubes floating in them and a random shot glass of weak miso soup and burnt sweet potatoes to start. Next, we shared a plate of sushi which was decent – but not worth the price. For our main, we ordered the filet mignon and what we were served was a beautiful filet mignon with a disgusting wad of cream sauce!! There was no sake in it, it tasted sweet and putrid. It completely ruined the meat. To top it off, we had about about pound each of broccolini on our plates for some reason – no one could possibly eat that much and it was such a waste. And then we had random rice balls and a cold sweet potato croquette on that plate.

Honestly, I would not recommend this place. There are plenty of better restaurants that you can go drop $250 on and this isn’t one of them.

I’ll start with the food — the steak was actually quite good. I’d give it an 8 out of 10. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end. The fries that came with our meal were tiny, more like hickory sticks than actual fries, which made them impossible to eat with a fork. Having to eat them with our fingers felt out of place for a restaurant that’s supposed to be on the fancier side.

The “salad” was also disappointing. It was basically just a pile of lettuce and spinach with vinaigrette — way too much of it, and not appetizing at all. The only part of the meal that I truly enjoyed was the steak.

As for the service, we had two waitresses. One of them was friendly but forgot to put in both our drink and food orders, which meant we waited a long time for everything. On top of that, we had to wait about 45 minutes just to be seated when we first arrived because they were so overbooked and we even made the reservation earlier that day. To make matters worse, one of the waitresses appeared to be intoxicated and ended up throwing up in the washroom later that evening.

Overall, the experience was completely unprofessional and disappointing. What should have been a nice evening out turned into a frustrating and unpleasant night. I would not recommend this restaurant.

I was disappointed with my experience at Basho. I’ve heard rave reviews about the place so I went in with high expectations. When we first arrived it was apparent that the hostess greeting us was intoxicated. Enough that each member of our party noticed. We had to wait a half hour after our reservation to be seated at our table. Our reservation was for 8:30 and we got our food at 10. The drinks were good but service was slow and “our ticket got lost” on our second round of drinks which left us sat at our table empty handed for over 30 minutes. I will say the steak was cooked well and delicious. The sides of greens and fries felt more like a filler to have the portions feel bigger.

My biggest problem was by far the intoxicated staff. She was very obviously intoxicated to the point where my friend walked in on her throwing up in the bathroom. We brought it up to our waitress and were informed the intoxicated staff member was the owners wife. This paired having to wait an hour and a half for our food would make me very hesitant to return or recommend the place to anyone.

Great fusion food. Decent drinks and atmosphere. Honestly I was hesitant after seeing several poor reviews of the service, but we found to servers to be welcoming, fast, and attentive. Definitely worth trying!
