I honestly don’t understand how this place has a 4.5 rating. When we arrived it was packed, and it’s clearly a popular spot with a strong small-town family crowd, which is great to see. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive and did a great job.

Unfortunately, the food and overall environment didn’t match the hype. When you walk in there’s a strong smell of old grease and the floor was noticeably slick. Everything we ordered tasted like it had been cooked in the same old oil with little to no seasoning — the fries, chicken tenders, and even the $30 ribeye. The steak itself was a poor cut and nowhere near worth the price.

The bathrooms were also a big miss. The men’s restroom has a push-open door with no lock, so there’s basically no privacy — it would get awkward fast if someone walked in at the wrong time. The women in our group mentioned their stalls had very low dividers that could be seen over while sitting, which made it uncomfortable.

I can see why locals enjoy it for the atmosphere and the service, but between the food quality, cleanliness concerns, and the bathroom setup, this was a disappointing experience for us and not somewhere we’d return. The 10 year old in our party would like the FBI contacted for a full investigation of their kitchen. Because this dinner was criminal.

The best fried chicken in Pittsburg…and that’s saying something in a town filled with famous fried chicken! The Idle Hour’s tavern is a throwback and worth the visit. While the chicken is terrific, the beer ice cold, the service friendly and efficient, it’s the sides of potato salad and slaw (vinegar based) that keeps me coming back for more.

Had heard good things about this place in Frontenac Kansas, their main food options is for German fried chicken, slaw and potato salad but they also have steaks etc. I went with a couple who hadn’t been there before so we were eager to try it. We ordered onion rings for an appetizer and we all ordered the chicken and slaw and potato salad. We all grew up in southwest Missouri and the chicken restaurants (chicken Annie’s, chicken Mary’s etc were only 26 miles away) so we had hoped this place would be as good as those restaurants are but it wasn’t the case. The onion rings were fried too long, the chicken was good but nothing special and the slaw and potato salad weren’t very good at all. Service was good and we had food to take back but I hardly ate any of my slaw and potato salad and I left it. I took one piece of chicken breast back with me but I gave it away. Maybe it was an off night but I can’t recommend it

Typical southeast Kansas chicken with German slaw and German potato salad. This place probably serves the hottest chicken, in other words fresh out of the cooker.

This place has great fried chicken, but you have to try their steaks! They cut their own…filets, ribeyes, t-bone, porterhouse, & strip. They know how to cook them, too! Give them a whirl!

Good solid food at morebl than reasonable prices. The fried chicken is great, as was my husbands chicken livers. Drink proces great too. Old school look with great food. Somewhat noisy but that said it was HC weekend so a LOT of folks in there. We would go back for sure.

friend said this place is great and is correct. “The fried chicken is really good” including the pricing. The 13 oz rib eye is a good value at $16.99. I’d describe the steak as oven cooked which is fine just don’t expect a grilled type cut. Not sure if they offer it in more of a grilled type fashion however since they do burgers it seems likely they would. Live music started at 7:30 on the Friday of our visit. Nice dance floor with juke box and service was attentive.
