It was our first time here today and we truly loved it. The minute we walked in we were greeted by the staff who was super friendly, energetic and very welcoming. Our waitress was amazing. The service is great and fast. We love the atmosphere of the place and the decor is beautiful. Our food was great too. We will be coming back more for sure. Amazing place!

We went for the Christmas Pop up and it is so cute and happy! We went during happy hour and the prices were good. I enjoyed a yummy mixed drink. They were out of bacon for our burgers and discounted all of our meals. Thank you!

My partner has been here before and noted that it’s slow but always assumed this had to do with the size of party he’d gone with.
It took 40 minutes to get our food on what appeared to be a quiet middle of the afternoon.
It took both a long time for our orders to be taken and to arrive.
Drinks were never refilled.
While my partner found his food okay, I ordered the ranch chicken sandwich and was very disappointed. The online picture shows ranch oozing off the sandwich. The reality was incredibly dry and bland tenders with barely any ranch. I also could not ask for more ranch to make the sandwich more palatable because the waitress never ran past the table until we were done eating. I was coughing the sandwich was so dry but we never got any check in nor drink refills. The fries were good as, were the lemonade and iced tea, but for the prices charged, the food and service were both very lacking.

While my partner was excited to share this restaurant with me, I can’t say I’d care to return, nor would I recommend.

Fries- Ever wonder what the ocean tastes like? Try these fries. They were so salty that it was inedible.
Burgers- Burnt and almost charcoal. Wasn’t asked how we wanted our burgers.
Service- when we said something about the fries. The gentleman came to us and got us better ones with no seasoning. Then seemed to be in a very rude mood.
The best part of the experience was the interior and decoration.

The winter decor was so fun!!!! It was quiet, not busy, but we enjoyed the music while we waited for our friends. Waitress was super friendly and helpful with the menu choices. Our food was brought out fast and tasted delicious!! Will definitely come again!!!

This establishment used to be much better. The waitress screwed up our orders. This was the second time that they claimed to be out of French fries, but later I observed others who order after us get fries. The burgers were overcooked and dry. We waited over 20 minutes to try to pay. My wife left to sit in the car hoping someone would notice. The restaurant was not busy, and my waitress stopped at her other table several times. Finally the person busing the tables ask if everything was alright. I told him no and that I had been waiting to pay. He asked who was my waitress, I couldn’t remember her name, but told him it was the heavier one. She came out with an attitude, and started to tell me that I could have used another term to describe her instead of heavier one. She claims to be pregnant, ok, doesn’t change she is the heavier of the two waitresses ( the other was very thin).

The portabelo mushroom fries were so good! And the serving was huge. We definitely got our money’s worth with them. The place wasn’t busy at all when we went, and whereas service was decent, our waiter just seemed to need some get-up-and-go! The rest of our meal was average. Chicken strips, potato rounds, patty melt, southwest egg rolls, all good but nothing that gets us wanting to come back. Those mushroom fries, though…. we will definitely be back for those!

Normally I’m not one to give too bad of reviews, but this one is worth mentioning. While the burger I ordered was good (though nothing truly special), the Nachos & Waffle Fries were easily the least impressive Nacho & Waffle Fries I’ve ever seen. Nachos were soggy and barely contained anything, fries were heavily burnt & oversalted. They were quick to accept refund, so that’s excusable, but the price does not reflect my expectations.

Restaurant was clean. They had MAYBE 2 tables in the restaurant with people in them. I ordered the PB&J Burger with sweet potato waffle fries. The burger was $16.50 and looked like a kid size burger. FOR THAT PRICE I would’ve thought that it would’ve been bigger. The waffle fries were so well done or sat out for a long time, that they were inedible. They were so hard. My boyfriend had the fish. I gave it a 4 out of 10 rating and he gave it a 5 out of 10. It really wasn’t anything to write home about. The only thing that was hot was the fish. This was our first time there and I really don’t think that we will be back. It was between this place and another that we frequent a bit and I picked this place. I was kind of sad that the visit wasn’t what I was expecting. Just wasn’t a visit worth the money.

Mikael was absolutely amazing!!! My party of 7 came in last night around 7:30pm as a walk-in and the restaurant was super busy. As soon as we walked in, Mikael who was running around was the host who greeted us with a smile right away. He said he had to do a quick lap around the restaurant to see if there was a table available since a lot of the tables had menus on them for reservations. He immediately came back and saw there was another party behind us and asked if they had a reservation which they did and he quickly sat them. He came right back to the host stand afterwards and told us one second while I clean a table. He went and bussed a table of 8 people’s worth of plates and drinks and cleaned the table in under 2 minutes where he sat us down what seemed like almost instantly for how busy they were. It was very impressive. Yet what was more impressive was within 5 minutes of sitting down we watched Mikael seat 6 more tables while also greeting them and bussing all their tables. I was astonished that within that 5 minutes he managed to pour 12 waters and dropped 5 of them off at a table and then came over and handed my party our waters and also told us he was going to be our server. At that point I was mind-blown that this man was also our server and running around doing the jobs of a busser and a host, while also watching him make bar drinks a couple times. As soon as he brought us waters he told us he would be right back, where I then watched him seat 5 more tables and then walked around and talked too 9 different tables including one outside which I can only assume were tables he was serving. Considering how much Mikael was running around and how busy it was I was not upset at all when it took him 10 minutes to get back over to us, and super energetically asked us if we wanted something else to drink. I don’t know how he was able to stay so positive with how much he was moving. We put in our drinks, appetizer and food order all at once and then he said I apologize and promise we will get it out as soon as possible but I am going to be honest we have about 22 different orders ahead of yours with To-Go orders with only two cooks. He then went around and checked on all his other tables and was running food while also attentively watching the door for guests. But his warning to my table and I made us worried it was going to take over an hour before we got our food and made us consider leaving if it hit an hour and 15 minutes since we were a bigger party. To my amazement he personally brought out all our food and kept refills coming during our insanely quick 45 minute wait. The food came out hot and absolutely delicious. When a restaurant is that busy and understaffed with that many reservations you would expect bad service, mid quality food, and long wait times. Yet Mikael and the kitchen managed to make our first experience here one to remember. We will definitely be back for sure just for him the next time we are in town. This restaurant exceeded my expectations. I am the General Manager at River Roast in Chicago, and he had better service, speed and attitude than any of my current staff. He said he was in school here in Iowa City, otherwise I was going to poach him to be my Assistant Manager. If he is not already a manager at Barrel House, he needs to be immediately. He was keeping the team afloat for sure, I’ve never seen anything like it. So if you are ever in the Iowa City / Coarlville area you need to stop at Barrel House and see Mikael the once in a lifetime server.
