What I love most is how easy they make everyday life. When I don’t want to think about what’s for dinner—and I don’t want takeout—I can zip right down and grab a fresh, beautifully prepared meal from the refrigerator or freezer. Everything is homemade, thoughtfully prepped, and made with real care and great ingredients. The portions are generous, too—when I bring meals home for my family, they often last us two full dinners. That’s two nights of excellent food I didn’t have to plan or cook, and it’s such a gift during busy weeks.
Mornings are just as easy. I can grab a kombucha or cold brew, a breakfast sandwich, or one of their pastries and be set for the day. Or I can pop in and grab everything I need to whip up a quick breakfast at home—eggs, milk, bacon, and their sourdough bread. Oh my god, the sourdough bread. Wow. Having all of that in one place makes mornings feel simple instead of rushed.
Barrel and Baskit functions seamlessly as a café, restaurant, pantry, and specialty market. You can build an impromptu charcuterie board, pick up something special for the grill, or stock your pantry with thoughtfully curated essentials. The beer selection is outstanding—from local New Hampshire favorites like Kettlehead to incredible offerings from places like Burlington and beyond—and they’re just as thoughtful with wine and elevated non-alcoholic options.
It’s also a wonderful place to settle in. You can grab a table, hop on the Wi-Fi, and work for the day. I’ve come in for a kombucha and breakfast, worked for a while, stayed longer than planned, then decided it was time for lunch and grabbed a drink and one of their hot soups (which are excellent). And the cookies—especially the toffee brown butter cookies—are unreal.
Their gift selection is another reason I rely on them so often. If I need a hostess gift, something for a gathering, a teacher gift, a quick birthday present, a thank-you gift, or even just a great card, I can pop in and know I’ll find something thoughtful and beautifully curated. They also make it incredibly easy to put together gift baskets—fast, easy, and always well received.
They shine during holidays and for entertaining, too. You can order prime rib, turkeys, appetizers, and full spreads for gatherings, and they’ve absolutely saved me more than once with last-minute party needs. The staff always has ideas and makes everything feel effortless.
And then there are the events—which really deserve the spotlight.
Barrel and Baskit hosts incredible brunches, music nights, tastings, and hands-on activities like making boxwood wreaths or creating bouquets. They also offer ticketed supper nights and community dinners—chef-prepared, gourmet meals that feel special, warm, and communal all at once. These events are so thoughtfully done and genuinely exciting. It honestly makes you stop and think: do people fully realize how incredible what they’re doing here really is?
More than anything, Barrel and Baskit feels like your right hand for getting through the week—a place you can depend on for meals, breakfast, gifts, coffee, work time, celebration, and connection. It’s truly an extension of family life in Hopkinton, and we’re incredibly fortunate to have them. What they’re doing is special, and it’s something our entire community can be proud of.
I’m a tough customer, I think.
Not to mention that this place used to be a great little village grocery/convenience store and it’s now an inconvenience store, you can’t even get cigarettes or lotto here anymore.
The breakfast sandwiches are mid and expensive, sadly.
Actually everything is expensive, premade Italian sandwiches for 14$ donut $2.50 ( Brothers so it’s expected and very good).
The coffee is horrible and only worth getting if you’re into self loathing. ( Yeah I do this occasionally) I know, I know, it’s a local roaster, but not everyone has the nack, and dark roast is for people who don’t have taste buds.
I remember back in the day when you could have a tab at the crack and get everything you needed, even if it was slightly more expensive than down in town, or back in conc. But those days are long gone.
I get it, the new folks are trying something else and I can respect that, but I have to go farther into tooky for the stuff I used to get here in the village.
Now that I have dragged the new crack through the mud, I will say that the place IS still here, you CAN get a coffee, a donut and a sausage egg and cheese, usually. Even if the stock is limited, they do have some basic stuff, but I no longer rely on being able to pop in for the pound of sugar I forgot in town or a half gallon of milk.
I understand the meal thing they’re doing is pretty good ( sorry I haven’t tried that part… I’m a good cook and do so myself) and the staff is always friendly.
They also have meals that you can bring home to cook and a awesome supply of specialty beer as well as non-alcoholic options. Great little place. Highly recommend!
I had probably the best Italian Sub there since I left Boston years ago.
If you need breakfast, their egg sandwiches are super fresh.
