Bareo (inspired by Baryo, Tagalog for “neighborhood”) is our next restaurant project, an expression of our love for Cannonborough–Elliotborough and the diverse food traditions that make this neighborhood feel like home. At its core, Bareo is about celebrating food and friendship. Open from 11 AM to 10 PM, it’s a neighborhood hangout that’s casual but elevated, playful yet grounded in tradition. Every element—from dumplings to shaved ice, from neon lights to paper menus—come together to create a space that feels both familiar and exciting. Taking the time to honor culinary tradition like doing the proper 7 pleats on the dumplings is a real indicator to me that Chef Nikko isn’t fooling around!
The space (back at Kultura’s old location) screams intimate Ramen shop in Japan, but don’t look for Ramen here. What you’ll get is a fantastic fusion of Japanese and Filipino foods that coexist perfectly side by side.
We sat at the counter and watched the Maestro (Chef Nikko) conduct his orchestra. Each set of hands came together in perfect harmony to produce an amazing array of flavors and textures.
Order cards and pencils are at each table and diners fill in the little circle like those multiple choice tests we used to take in school.
Most categories had 3 choices and with a few having 2 choices. (See Menu photo)
We had:
Tuna Yuzu Kosho- Onigiri
Scallop, Bagoong, Lemon – Handroll
Salmon, Miso, Megi – Handroll
Wagyu Truffle – Dumplings
Pork and Cabbage- Dumplings
Bento Box with Miso Salmon, Pork Humba, Potato Salad, Pickles (shiitakes, Cucumbers, Cauliflower), Sinigang Soup, and. Boiled Egg with jammy yolk – Large Plates
Ube & Strawberry – Kakigori with Strawberry syrup, Ube Whipped Cream and Lychee
Kakigori is the only Charleston snow I can wrap my mind around, lol
The general vibe is fun and neighborly. The service is awesome and each dish is explained when it arrives at your table.
If you are a fan of Dumplings and Japanese and/or Filipino eats, you will love Bareo!
