My favorite spot in Salt Lake! Bar Nohm never disappoints. The food is incredible every time. The fried tofu is my absolute favorite (the bartenders even know it’s my go-to!), perfect portion and full of flavor. Every dish is creative and beautifully balanced, and the cocktails pair perfectly. The shiso dessert is a must have every time! The team is always so welcoming and you can tell they really care about what they do. I can’t recommend it enough!

Killer spot. Best meal of our year so far. Loved every single thing we ordered: fried tofu gochujang noodles, cucumber salad, karaage chicken, and mushroom wrapped in pork skewer. Definitely coming back.

**An Honest Review of Nohm**

I forgot to post this on Valentine’s Day. I took my partner out for oysters at the Pop-Up Oyster Bar in town, and it was alright..the oysters were fresh that’s what matters. However, it was freezing outside, so we decided to head to Nohm since they advertised fresh oysters.

Upon arriving, we asked about the oysters of the day, and the staff had no idea. We were seated at the bar and asked again, “What are the oysters of the day? Are they fresh?” They replied, “We don’t know.” Uh ok?…They then went to check and we ordered a set.

Before the oysters, we ordered two Valentine’s drinks and a Sapporo on draft, which is rare in Utah. I was excited..But apparently, most Sapporo is made in Italy? According to the bartender, that’s wild. I need to research if that’s true.

We finally got our oysters. My partner took a bite and didn’t react the way someone should when enjoying oysters..it was bad. She asked me to try one, and I don’t normally eat oysters, but it was terrible. The stones on the plate were colder than the oysters. They looked like they had been sitting around and frozen. It ruined the evening.

The bartender apologized and asked if we wanted another set. I said sure let’s give it another go. But when he returned, he had forgotten about it..He explained that they would be 86’d for the night because the chef had tasted one and declared them bad. Fantastic..I had these three drinks I couldn’t even finish because we had to drive. I shouldn’t have been so eager..

We even tried the mushrooms and asked another waiter what kind they were, who gave me a scientific name to sound impressive. When they arrived, they were just brown button mushrooms dried and rubbery. After being disappointed twice, there was no way we would order anything else. We didn’t even finish our drinks.

I have to say, Nohm has gone downhill since it first opened. I won’t be returning, which is sad because I used to like this place. What’s going on, kitchen? Are you slacking and getting complacent? I need to get Gordon Ramsay over here!

The only good thing was the bartender was nice, and the drinks tasted good. But the kitchen is lacking. Is it because they focus more on ‘water witch’? What’s really going on? I should have gotten a full refund for that chaotic experience I only paid for the drinks and rubbery mushrooms.

I desperately wanted to like this place – gussied-up yakitori with a korean spin? sign me up! – but ended up being disappointed in the food. I would summarize it as asian food trying too hard, aimed squarely at a white palate. I would rate it 3 stars except it was overpriced ($100+ for 2 people, no drinks) which knocks it down another star.

We ordered what I saw was well-reviewed: the cucumber salad, the fried tofu, 3 skewers, and the grilled mackerel – one of my favorite fishes, I had it almost every morning in Japan for breakfast. The cucumber salad (3 stars) was fairly standard but not special, something you would expect as banchan in any KBBQ – the addition of squid made it extra fishy. The fried tofu was most disappointing (1 star) – all the ingredients separately would have been wonderful – maitake mushrooms are always special, I usually love agedashi tofu, and I’m chinese so hot and sour soup is a classic. But the combination of so many different strong flavors clashed, and ended up with a confused dish. The tofu, more typically served in a delicate dashi, did not do well in the thick cornstarch heavy soup and the skin ended up chewy, mired in a thick glop. I felt like I was being punched in the mouth with different clashing flavors and textures. The yakitori skewers were standard (3 stars) the mushroom was marinated in a pleasant soy, the chicken came with a nice grilled smoky flavor although lacking any crisp on the exterior, and the pork and enoki was tasty even if the texture was stringy rather than tender. The grilled mackerel was the best savory course, with spot on flavors, tangy pickled gingers, on a bed of creamy ochazuke. Unfortunately, the entire dish was also horribly oversalted to the point of almost being inedible.

The shiso dessert was pretty interesting and a refreshing end to the meal (4 stars). I guess I would recommend the yakitori if you’ve never been to Japan and want to try it, and the dessert.

This was recommended to me by a local and it definitely is easy to miss. Sort of on the edge of the city, in an area with not much around it. This Bar features a small but incredibly flavorful menu. I started with the sesame noodles and the flavor is just perfect. The noodles have a hint of sweet to it but complimented by the meat and the Sichuan peppers and it all comes together in such a great way. The baby octopus was the standout though. However if you are a picky eater or sensitive to texture I would not recommend. But the flavor of the sauce and the paddies is just out of this world. It just overwhelms you in the best way. The bar tenders were super friendly and right there to help out. It’s fairly small but a cool atmosphere that would also make it a great spot for a night cap or meet up with friends.

There was so many things to choose. I wanted to try all of them but I eventually got too full.. every item I had was amazing, they all had unique flavors. There were a few items that I did want to try but they were already sold out, I’m not sure if that is a regular thing (hopefully not). I also heard they switch menus from time to time soooo… I cannot wait to return again!!

Now the cons:
It definitely feels super over priced for the food. A beef skewer had 4 pieces of bite size beef for $8, that’s $2 a bite. Drink, I know very little about so I’ll not comment on it. Portion size is small that’s why I ordered a lot. Plates sizes were the size of an average hand

I will say, it’s probably more of a bar than a dine in restaurant, where you order full meals. Next time when I return I’ll probably have some dinner or food ahead and come enjoy a few bites here instead. Something that I would recommend others do as well.

Favorite spot in salt lake, hands down. Bar Nohm is the heart of the Granary district and it’s the best place to take friends who have never been.

The cocktails change often and are very creative and fun. For how great the ambiance is, the food doesn’t have to be good, but it’s also incredible. The sesame noodles or fried karage are incredible dishes.

The staff are super friendly and you can tell everyone genuinely enjoys working there and adding to the great vibe. Sitting on the patio and people watching is the best.

Wish there were more places in SLC like this!

This was a fantastic meal. The standouts were the oden and kushiyaki. The Asian pear salad was also delicious. The only thing I probably wouldn’t order again was the spicy baby octopus, just because I find gochujang-based sauces to be sort of one-note. But even then the baby octopus was impossibly tender. My mocktail—a spicy, citrus-y number—was actually interesting and not just a glass of gussied-up juice. The space is intimate without being cramped, and the decor is eclectic. Service was top-notch. I’d come here again in a heartbeat to happily eat my way through the rest of the menu.

SO GOOD

Vibe was amazing, drinks were so unique but also delicious, and FANTASTIC food. We had the sesame noodles, karaage, and the fried tofu. Sesame noodles were my personal favorite. Karaage were so fantastic though, it was like a moist rotisserie chicken in chicken nugget form but better lol.

I love that they rotate their drink menu every 3 months! The drinks this time had a few “cake” themed ones. My favorite was definitely the owner, with the little pineapple cake on top. Also amazing was the passion of the rice, guava margarita, and leaf me alone. Funfetti wap was the only one I didn’t love. The cake foam was bomb but the drink itself tasted too almost sour to me.

100/10 experience, will be going back!
