The Gnocchi is the best. Most of the menu is great, but there are a couple of things we didn’t love. The service is great and the food is really good. Just be aware some of the more interesting menu items might not do it for you if you don’t happen to have the most refined of palates (like me). Highly recommend it for a little fancier meal.

We went to BLG for a birthday dinner and absolutely loved it! The ambiance was more causal than we thought (which we didn’t mind!). We had a 6:30 reservation and were seated promptly. We ordered the following:

I can’t think of another restaurant in the Twin Cities that is consistently outstanding in terms of food, service and experience. Year after year, no matter how many different times we visit, and whatever we order from the menu, Bar La Grassa exceeds our expectations time and time again. And apparently, I’m not the only one who feels this way. Bar La Grassa has been open since 2009 and reservations are still booked at least a week or two in advance. Also, parking is inherently challenging in the North Loop, so be sure to arrive early to find a meter or plan to valet.

Wow! This place was something special. Everything from service to food exceeded my expectations. We were able to reserve a last minute spot during a weekend at prime time, and was seated shortly after checking in. It’s a bustling place, reservations are highly encouraged.

Food was unique and full of flavoring. Every dish seemed to have its own theme and the flavors were great. You could tell they’ve spent a lot of time on their recipes. Service was not the quickest but was very friendly. We went on a Monday night if that makes any difference. It was pretty loud inside from all the talking so it was hard to hear each other from across the table. Overall I would highly recommend this Italian place if you are in the area!

Food was all around amazing- the pasta is so fresh, some of the best I’ve had in the cities. We got the bolognese, cavatelli and cheesecake for a birthday dessert. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. Great experience.

So far have been to BLG a total of 3 times and personally I have suffered from stomach issues 2 out of those 3 times, and I have concluded that the food at BLG in general is very rich, so it is imperative for someone like me whose stomach is not usually used to this type of rich food to not order too much food in one setting, or to drink water (the latter not recommended). However, none of the aforementioned experience denies the fact that BLG has excellent food! My top choice that I will gladly recommend everyone is, like what a lot of people say, the soft eggs & lobster bruschetta. It is soft, tender, well-seasoned, and abundant in amount! I also highly recommend the gnocchi with cauliflower & orange, even if some may think the combination sounds weird. The gnocchi is so fresh and soft that you will never go back to grocery store pre-made potato gnocchi after that. Other dishes that I enjoyed were the pappardelle with veal ragu, the crab ravioli, the foie gras tortellini, the chicken liver mousse bruschetta, and the cavatelli with rabbit sugo. The ones that I have had but may not recommend as much are the braised octopus bruschetta, which contains toppings that I personally do not feel like go together (the potatoes and nuts diminish the octopus taste) and the new york strip steak, which I think is too salty and has too little amount for the price. Overall they make very fresh and tasty pasta, and the amount can be considerable, depending on what you get. Maybe because it has a lot of creamy ingredients, but it turns out very rich and one may easily get tired of it halfway. BUT, this is where the dessert can help! I strongly recommend the limoncello sorbet! Such a refreshing feel after all the rich food! I also think the dark chocolate budino is very good. When I had it, it tasted like nutella instead of dark chocolate. But hey, I prefer milk chocolate on the regular, and if a restaurant can make dark chocolate taste like milk chocolate, I am not complaining 😉 As much as I am giving a 4 star, I still regard this restaurant as one of the best in Minneapolis, and my rating is only reflective of how I physically have reacted to the food more than once, while knowing that I can be unique in this situation.

4.4 ⭐ – Was overall happy with our experience. My girlfriend and I made a reservation for our anniversary since BLG comes highly recommended. We were hoping for a 2-Top table but received the long shared bench booth. Unfortunately, our table lined up where two booth cushions split, making it uncomfortable for my girlfriend. It also presents a proximity challenge for the servers to tend on the neighboring tables without brushing our shoulders.

Outstanding Italian food, excellent service, and a fun vibe. For first-time goers, I recommend trying a variety of dishes and sharing family style. The menu has antipasta, bruschetta, pasta, meats, desert, and after-dinner drinks. The prices are quite reasonable too!

Everything we had here was delicious. I got the carbonara. It was probably the second best I’ve ever had. The first was in Rome. The colada cocktail was delicious. It was like a light piña colada. Not too sweet but very flavorful. My wife got the MALTAGLIATI W/MILK-BRAISED SHORT RIB & RICOTTA SUGO. It was also delicious. The Cesar salad was very fancy with real anchovies. Great atmosphere too.
