We ended up at bao unexpectedly and ended up having a scrumptious feast. Everyone wanted to try out different dishes so we ended up getting pretty much everything we wanted.
None of the dishes were disappointing. Some bao and dim sum plates were cooked with original Chinese seasoning, which may be an oddity for people who are unfamiliar with them.
This was a great find as you also get a ton of value in terms of quantity and different unique dishes to try out.

Excellent Chinese dim sum spot. I ordered the house special xiao long bao and loved the idea of serving each one in an aluminum foil cup to catch the soup drippings. I also tried the chive and shrimp pan-seared dumplings, which were delicious and generously filled with shrimp. The sweet buns were adorably designed, and the seafood fried rice had a great wok flavor. The restaurant was very clean, and the service was excellent. Highly recommended!

A lovely place with delicious food – for both meat-eaters, vegans and vegetarians. We ordered some very good baos and vegetarian dumplings, and then we had this intricately made mango stuffed hot pastry, looking like swans. The waitress was super sweet and intelligent – she brought us two boxes when I looked at her, she knew it already by the content of our plates. Thank you for a nice experience, Bao team!

4.5/5 all things considered. Dim sum quality is decent. It’s clean, well run, relatively fast. Kudos on not charging any such SF mandate fee, and that suggested tip is calculated based on subtotal. Honesty right there. Downside is pricing which is on the mid to high side for this level of dim sum, but you get to eat dim sum at night, and the vibe is overall great.
To get 5/5, restaurant needs to slightly further improve on service, food quality and presentation.

Great to have dim sum in this neighborhood. Authentic but more upscale than traditional places, the “classic” XLB, ha gow, siu mai, were great. Pan fried turnip cake and piping hot Portuguese style custard tarts were fresh and delicious! Singapore noodles also satisfying. The spicy XLB and pot stickers flavor not so well balanced. Service was fast but the server repeatedly seemed unsure where to put down the dishes. Just find a spot! Don’t ask us to clear space. Prices are as you would expect for this neighborhood. They have very cute designs in their sweet buns (which I didn’t order—I don’t like sweet buns), and this corn-shaped mango pudding was both super cute and yummy with chunks of mango inside! There are better places in SF but if you’re in the neighborhood this is definitely worth visiting rather than going across town.

I’ve tried countless dumplings, from restaurants to frozen ones, and even some my friends made themselves. But let me tell you, this is different and the best. We’ve tried steamed shrimp dumplings, wontons, and potstickers dumplings, and each one was exceptional in its own way. However, the shrimp dumplings are simply mind-blowing. You have to try them!

A top tier dim sum experience. For vegetarians, this is a must try and indulgent place. There’s sooo many options and the soup dumplings were delicious. Highly recommend the sweet mixed plate baos as well to get a flavor of everything. Easy to over order but honestly worth it anyways! Noodles were also sooo good

Scrumptious dumplings that are freshly made on the premises. Each morsel more tantalizing than the next. The atmosphere is soothing and calm, and the service is too notch. Don’t miss this incredible culinary experience.

I lived in China for several years, so am no stranger to good dumplings. Bao offers a precise, modern take on the dumpling house. It avoids the bustle of traditional dim sum and the polish of Din Tai Fung, opting instead for focus and restraint.
The crab and pork xiao long bao are exemplary—thin-skinned, well-sealed, and filled with a clean, flavorful broth. The Sichuan variant adds heat without overwhelming balance. Both show discipline in technique and clarity in flavor.
Fried dumplings arrive crisp and neat, not greasy. Steamed vegetables are firm and well-seasoned—simple, but attentive. The teas are carefully chosen and properly brewed.
Prices are high, but the quality justifies the cost. Service is impeccable, food clean and fast, prepared to the highest standard.
