Banksia Cafe – South Plaza is just south of Brush Creek, a short and pleasant walk from the main area. The cafe offers a full menu with plenty of choices. I tried the dirty chai latte, which was excellent.
The space is bright, open, and inviting. The service was warm and friendly, and the atmosphere is made special by the many plants throughout. An entire wall is filled with healthy philodendrons that look almost unreal at first glance. The greenery creates a peaceful and unique ambience.
The life the plants bring makes the space feel distinctive. I would recommend a visit for both the food and the relaxing setting. The pancakes were very interesting and I was glad that there was a half order available.

UPDATE I met a friend here for lunch today. I promised myself to try this restaurant again. I wanted to raise my star rating but I am not able to do so. Last week was restaurant week and apparently many resources were diverted to their downtown location. My friend chose this restaurant for the vegetarian options. We arrived just before noon to discover that her first choice was not available, vegetable pot pie, her second choice was also not available, quiche, her third choice was the Moroccan salad was available!! And she loved it! I had the beef pie, it was also very tasty. I’m sorry that the Banksia cafe has fallen short again today. Guessing that my timing is really bad and everyone can have an off day here and there I will try them again because the food is really good and a bit different. Easy to find at 4800 main Street, in the old board of trade building just on the south edge of the Plaza. Great location with plenty of off street parking if you know where to find it. The covered parking is just west of main Street next to stock hill. The princess and I just had lunch here today. The princess tried the chicken pie , she loved it and shared some with me and I can concur it was very good. I had the corned beef sandwich and the flavor was also excellent. The only issues I had is the service was painfully slow. We were not in a hurry so not a big deal. Also the portions are very small versus the large price. Look at my photo of the $15 sandwich , nearly missed on the meat. I don’t mind paying a fair price for a hefty sandwich but this was a near miss. Too bad since I did like the food and the staff was also very strong but slow. Breakfast looks better and next time I’ll try their breakfast.

Loved this Australian café near The Plaza in KC. Great meat pies – I got the Greek Lamb. Coffee was decent and the lamington hit the spot for us Aussies so far from home.

Saw this place on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, so decided to try it out. Nice, clean and friendly atmosphere. Food is great. I didn’t get any pastries, but definitely plan to try some on my next trip there. Water and regular coffee are self-serve. (And free!)

This place was awesome! We had a late breakfast and I finally got to try Vegemite on toast!! No wonder my Australian friends love it, it was delicious. Such a fun menu, plus a front display of yummy baked goods and a full bar. Service was fast and super friendly. Again, I can’t have caffeine but was made a beautiful decaf drink on request. The biscuit and gravy was served as it should be.. in a bowl, swimming in gravy! My breakfast burrito was huge, took half home for the next day. And to top it all off, the place is full of philodendron! (Common houseplant) They basically have 2 walls covered in plants, so refreshing.

Amazing dinner at with our travel and tourism group. Everything was prepared to absolute perfection and the flavors were exquisite! Breakfast until 5pm, and we were able to have a private dining experience. Service was excellent.
Bakery and full bar at this location. I asked them to pick any baked good for me to buy on my way out and they gave me a caramel bar that was the most decadent little square!
There’s a complimentary parking garage behind the building and a ramp to the door, making entry accessible to this second-floor businesses. There’s also street parking. Restrooms are in the office building (use back entry to restaurant) and are gender specific and accessible.

It’s always the nitpickers leaving low ratings. The ones probably spending $4K a month on a mortgage and $3K on Instacart. Complaining about the silliest things. Giving a restaurant a bad review because something was sold out? Come on. Try showing up when they first open!
Everything’s going up these days, so honestly, I think the prices here are fair. Anyway, I love this place. I usually order the same thing every time. The sausage breakfast burrito and it never disappoints.

Chicken Banh mi: 100% amazing, no notes, perfect sandwich, perfect lunch.
Vegemite Toast: you either love it or hate it
Lamington: OMG it’s like heavenly baby angels coming down to dance sweetly on my tongue; offering a precious whisper of coconut blowing gently over the delicious valley of chocolate and rolling hills of sponge and jam.
Coffee: Great
Service: Amazing
Snickerdoodle: My kid loved it

Breakfast sandwich was good. Pain au chocolate was dry and tasted old. Latte had blown out foam. Eggs Benedict didn’t have hollandaise sauce and the salad with it had old lettuce. I wanted to love it but $70 for breakfast has to be better.
