We ordered the Cha Gio, Grilled scallop with butter , Banh Beo, Banh Xeo pancake, and Banh Mi. Each dish was fabulous in its own way — fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared.
The Banh Mi and Grilled scallop with butter were definitely our favorites. Highly recommend trying them!
The friendly service made the whole experience feel extra special and welcoming. We would absolutely come back again.
The grilled ribeye steak bánh mì was just as good. I don’t know what they put in that sauce, but it was insanely savory and umami. Every bite was bursting with flavor without being overwhelming. The steak itself was juicy, tender, and really well-charred, with a deep beefy flavor that paired so well with the freshness of the pickled vegetables and herbs.
Fun fact (from the server we talked to): the owner started this spot after working at Hanoi House, another popular Vietnamese restaurant nearby.
if I remember correctly, it was already my fourth time here.
This time I came with friends, and we had to wait in line. When the restaurant opened, we put our names on the waitlist and waited at the bar nearby. After about an hour, we got a text that our table was ready. Totally worth the wait.
The food came out quickly and tasted amazing. We ordered Bánh Bèo, summer rolls with shrimp, scallops with scallion oil, Thịt Kho, Bánh Cuốn Hà Nội, and several other dishes I can’t even remember – there was a lot of food, and everything was phenomenal.
For drinks, I had the coconut cream coffee and the egg cream iced coffee both were incredible. The prices are very reasonable for the quality and experience.
Great vibes, and the staff were so kind and friendly. I highly recommend this place and can’t wait to come back again.
The Bun Cha Ha Noi was nearly perfect; the sauce and sides were spot on, though the Cha Nem could have been fried a bit longer to get that deep golden brown shell. Skip the scallops with melted cheese if you don’t like sweets—they were a bit too sugary for me.
The decor and vibe are stylish and authentic to Northern Vietnam. It is definitely worth trying for the food, but the long wait in the NYC cold makes it hard to justify a second trip during winter.
My personal favorites were:
1. OG banh mi (agree with other reviews that it is the best I’ve had in NYC… packed with pate!!)
2. Scallops (so diep sot trung muoi)
Had sample servings of the pho and bun bo hue which I thought were good too
Things that they could absolutely do better:
When it’s your turn off the wait-list, it gives you 5 minutes to return. There’s not a lot of places to kill time for an hour or two indoors in the winter 5 minutes away. Having 15 minutes would allow for some more flexibility in where you’re waiting, and an estimated wait time on the app would help better estimate when you should start walking.
That would mitigate the awkward crowd hovering behind the bar for an hour, waiting for their table. This should make it easier for staff to tell people to keep the door closed. It was so cold at the restaurant, even the staff at the front looked cold. Sitting at the bar was drafty and the line of people holding the door open when it’s dead of winter ultimately detracted from the eating experience.
Everything we ordered was good. The crispy spring rolls were especially great, and the dishes were fresh and well balanced. The Bún Bò Huế was different from the spicy, tomato-based versions I’m used to, but still flavorful and comforting.
Would definitely come back for dinner again.
We ordered a few things to share. The Pho Ga (house chicken pho) was soo delicious. The broth was so rich without being oily or heavy, and the chicken was cooked to a perfect tenderness. I really liked the texture of the noodles, which were chewy without being soggy. Overall the portion size was very filling.
The bun suon cha gio (pork chop & spring roll rice) was very good, too. The spring rolls had a very tasty filling, and the pork chop was delicious — savoury and juicy (also without being too oily). The veggies were fresh and tied the flavours of the pork and noodles/sauce together nicely.
We also had the xoi thit kho. I really liked the mung bean sticky rice — it goes so well with the pork floss and crispy onions sprinkled above. The pork belly was really fatty and delicious (thought a bit too oily for my taste), and I overall thought the mix of the pate, sausage, pork, veggies, and rice was a very enjoyably electric combination for a rice dish, I I would definitely recommend giving this dish a try, too.
Biggest gripe was that the pacing was a bit off — we got our pho around 20 minutes before the other two dishes
Overall price point was on the higher side, but I think it was quite worth the quality and portion size of everything we ordered (so much leftovers!). I feel like I’d probably try to come back at least 30 min before they open next time to get seated when they open — it’s a difficult situation since having a reservation system opens a separate can of worms for places as popular as this.
Bánh Anh Em, however, is an absolute gem that offers a layer of culinary substance and honesty that is becoming increasingly difficult to find.
The hype here is real, and the line outside starts forming early—if you aren’t there well before opening, you might as well go home and eat cereal.
I actually showed up with no idea how long the wait really was, or if I would even get in given I was told the whole day was already sold out! But the host was so sweet and found a way to squeeze me in at the bar.
The staff is a very special kind of kind. These people are culinary wizards who are clearly proud of their gifts, yet they remain incredibly humble and welcoming—a rare find given they are operating one of the most sought-after tables in the city.
Once you get in, the food is spectacular. I went for the grilled scallops in rich sauce and the BBQ pork sandwich (Bánh Mì Thịt Nướng), and it was a total delight. The bread is made in-house and is so heavenly; the pork is crispy, juicy, and seasoned with an array of spices. The grilled scallops, especially that sauce, were handled with diabolical intent!
It is rare to find a place that respects the ingredients as much as they respect the guest. This isn’t a mere meal; it is a gift of hospitality from people who clearly love what they do.
Thank you…
