When founders Jeremy Mandrell and Anne Ng set out from the Bay Area to San Antonio, they thought they’d left their baking careers for good. Then they started making and selling pastries at a farmer’s market on the weekends for the love of it and quickly developed a fan base. When they met local entrepreneur Charlie Biedenharn, that stand became Bakery Lorraine, an artisanal bakery that was named one the country’s best new bakeries. Since then, they’ve been recognized as one of the Top 100 Bakeries in the US by Food and Wine and nominated for best pastry chefs by the James Beard Foundation. Our philosophy is simple – we make fresh pastries that reflect our respect for the ingredients and the technique of our craft. Everyday.
Bakeshop with a patio serving sandwiches & an array of cookies, tarts & muffins, plus coffee.

First impressions when we walked in was great. I love cute, decorated cafes that feel welcome and homey. It was pretty empty when we got here but started getting busier after a while.
My first problem was the price. It was pretty expensive. And look, I don’t mind paying a lot for food, I love trying different places, but you have to feel the value is there. So I wasn’t put off by the price until I experienced the food. We ordered the breakfast sandwich (I chose sausage as the protein), my wife got the avocado toast and added smoked salmon, I got my son the stack of 3 pancakes from the kids menu and added 1 scrambled egg, then we got 2 baked goods, 3 macarons, and two lattes. It came out to $85. We got a lot but that’s still on the pricier side. Again, the price really wasn’t the issue yet.
Even though there were only a couple people in here before we got here (and they already had their orders) it took 30 minutes to get ours!! Then, my wife and I got our food, and it took another 5-10 minutes for my son’s pancakes and scrambled egg to come out. Not only that when they brought our food, it was luke warm so the good, bad, and ugly about the food.
The lattes (cinnamon toast and pumpkin pie) were delicious. They were super tasty and I liked them a lot. My food was really tasty. The sausage wasnt just a frozen patty, it seems like it was made fresh. But I saw my sandwich sitting out there for at least 10 minutes getting cold. They were also super cheap with the potato chunks. They were good, but for a $15 plate, I felt they were skimpy and barely warm. My wife’s plate was pretty good. I mean the smoked salmon was alright. They put a poached egg on it but it wasn’t even runny. They overcooked it. So meh. My plate was a 6/10. It would have been better if it was warmer. My wife’s maybe a 7 out of 10. When my son FINALLY got his food.. again.. disappointing. The pancakes were extremely mid. They weren’t really fluffy and lacked flavor. We waited 30 minutes for this plate. My 6 year old son that loved and wanted pancakes ate the egg first… that never happens. I don’t think he finished half the pancakes.
The only thing I haven’t tried yet is the pastries. I wanted to write this review while I had time, since it’s been such a disappointment. I’ll come edit it once I’ve tried them and hopefully it’s redeeming.
I’m glad I tried this place, I’ve wanted to come here for a while, but it was a let down. I’d much rather go to The Baked Bird where the prices are about the same, but great portions, it’s fresh and warm, and you can literally eat the pancakes without syrup.
As for the food…
The quiche = AMAZING
Puff pastry wit lemon = DROOL, amazing
… okay do I haven’t had anything I didn’t like. Maybe the egg bites, but that’s only in comparison to the quiche.
Great place to find a sweet snack and grab a good cup of coffee.
The food items are pricey but very delicious!
I recommend the Salmon Cruissant Sandwich! The turtle tart is very delicious as well!
