We stopped in for dinner because my sister told me this spot has the best burgers. I tried the sugarskull and fries per her reccomendation. It was SO GOOD. The caramelly bacon is delicious. Best burger I’ve had in a long time. My partner has he poutine with their house duck gravy. It was so flavorful. Their fries are nice and crispy too. We will absolutely be back! Thank you for the kind service and delicious foods. Unfortunately I only got a picture of my fries, we ate everything else too quickly

It was my first time at this place and it has good reviews so I was excited to get home and try their Fungi Baron burger that I picked up on my way. Staff were friendly and the place had a unique vibe. Unfortunately after eating some of my burger I noticed that it was still pink so I tossed it. It’s always disappointing to waste money. I still had to end up cooking something else for dinner so that sucked too.

We ordered Backstairs Burger tonight and have been here many times before with consistently great food. Unfortunately, tonight was really disappointing. Both burgers were extremely burnt so much so that we couldn’t even eat half of them. It definitely felt like there was a lack of quality control, especially considering how much we paid.

I will say the fries and duck tots were good, but overall this delivery did not meet the standard we’ve come to expect. Hoping this was just an off night.

It was pretty good, the sugar skull burger was very tasty and so was the milkshake (I are it before I could take a pic), but the crack fries were too salty for my taste. Service was mediocre, the girl looked like she didn’t want to be there, but she was pretty nice. Overall it was pretty good!

This place is definitely a huge hidden gem! I wish they had more burger joints like Backstairs! The sugar skull burger is my favourite, & the professor PB&J burger is a must try! My boyfriend and I also got the basic B & the fungi because we couldn’t decide. The duck wings are phenomenal too, perfectly sauced and seasoned. My boyfriend and I loved coming to this place when we were still living in Alberta and we give any excuse to go back whenever we’re in the province. If your looking for a good filling messy burger, go here! Probably one of thee best burger locations in Edmonton. Can’t wait to try more of their menu!

I’m a regular at this place so normally I wouldn’t review it, but I was asked by someone. I felt I owed these folks a longwinded review. I will say that this place has the best smash burgers I’ve ever had and it’s not even comparable.

For the review I’m going to give the Google categories a try instead of my own, starting with:

ATMOSPHERE:
The interior of the place doesn’t look the best or even very appealing to me but you can tell it’s a relatively “newer” place, so it’s not in the image that the owner’s want yet. The area is small but not bad in the summer/spring since they have a few outdoor tables. The establishment would greatly benefit from expanding to the unit either north, south or both.

The floor does need to be redone. It has quite a few cracks and imperfections. One day last year I was sitting in the northwest corner of the shop and my chair leg fell into an open vent. I fell back and hit my head on the window. Luckily no one saw this and I just acted like it never happened . But this could happen to anyone so some maintenance wouldn’t hurt.

Of course the main thing that keeps the atmosphere at such a high mark for me is the music. My genre; 90s, early 2000s and 2010s rap, hip hop and RnB. Crazy good music, the only restaurant that tries to step out of the boring music fad without resorting to a lounge or bar setting. I would eat in this place just for the music alone.

SERVICE:
Everyone for the most part is friendly. All the folks working the kitchen have manners and are very polite and oddly enough, this has nothing to do with the grade I’ve given backstairs. No, the main issue with the service is their setup. Up until recently when I spoke to one of the staff, they’ve been using the “pay before you eat” form of dining. Paying before you receive the service you’re tipping for is a good way for people not to tip.

Most places that do this usually don’t get a tip, especially on someones first visit. People usually tip for the previous service we received, not the future service that we may or may not like. Now that being said, the tip option hasn’t shown up on the system the last few times I went. Meaning now I can’t tip at all to support the staff here.
Quite disappointing that it’s either the bad prepayment system or it’s no tipping at all. These guys definitely deserve tips.

One main issue that i see is the absence of a staff member in the front usually. Yes i realize that they have down time and yes I understand that anyone might be required to cook in the back, but this creates an obvious opportunity.
I never saw it happen here myself but I’m willing to bet my right leg that someone has walked in, grabbed a drink and left. I’ve watched people come in stand in the front for a few seconds then leave when I asked them if they needed something. I’ve told 2 people that the washroom isn’t for the public because I was the only person around. Hell, theft is rampant in the Rexall across the parking lot, so there’s no way a small restaurant with visible drinks haven’t had some stolen.
Not sure if it’s an option now but maybe when the restaurant gets bigger then the establishment should have a person at the front full-time.

FOOD:
Believe it or not, I don’t have much to say here. I’ve tried nearly every item on the menu and I try the feature burger whenever I’m around for it. For reference, the feature burger changes every month and they usually have collaborations with an influencer of some sort. I personally couldn’t care less about the influencer but the burgers are phenomenal. I haven’t came across any misses at all. Some random items like duck wings are crazy good. The poutine, along with all the fries are excellent. I really can’t say much more about the food. Go try it, it’ll be worth it.

OVERALL:
Prices are fair, most normal eaters would be okay with just the poutine or 1 burger. There’s nice people and great food. If you like burgers come here. If you don’t like smash burgers from other places, then come here and the food will change your mind.
Vegans stay away, you wouldn’t like it.

The Duck Tots I’m told were delicious, but they weighed 4 times as much as my burger. I got the peanut butter burger. Where was the burger? Where was the bacon? Where was the banana aoli? The only thing I could taste were the hickory sticks covered in peanut butter. The smash burger was so small I had to open the bun to make sure it was there. Bacon was 1 thin slice. I couldn’t eat a quarter of the burger and I was still hungry. I understand smash burger, but I was wanting a burger. This was not a burger by any definition.

Ordered from the South location and was surprised at how quick it was sent out for delivery. I had the Dr. BBQ burger and it was delicious! I’ll definitely order it again. I got the original spice fries and it was a surprising flavour, chili and lemon? Yes please. And the Reese’s shake? Absolutely delicious, so much peanut butter flavour.

I’ve eaten ALOT of burgers in my life. This has raised the bar. The most phenomenal burger and duck tots I’ve ever had in my life. I feel cheated that I only discovered this joint today. Do yourself a favor and get a burger from here. I cannot compliment this place enough. They put passion into their food and service and it shows. Chef Mohammed, I’m in love with your, you delightful man <3

Unfortunately, I was really disappointed with our visit to Backstairs Burger today. We drove quite a ways to come here and it was meant to be a special family outing. I had Backstairs Burger once before and enjoyed it, which is why I was excited to bring my husband to try it.

The experience today was not great. We waited over 30 minutes for our food, and when it finally arrived my burger was cold. The bun in particular felt like it had just been defrosted and was still cold to the touch.

Most of the burgers we ordered seemed dry and overcooked. The bacon especially looked old and dried out. Overall, it felt like the burgers relied heavily on sauces to be even somewhat salvageable.

For our family, the bill came to about $100 before tip, which made the experience even more disappointing given the quality of the food.

We were really looking forward to this visit, which made the disappointment even greater. Sadly, today was not a good representation of the quality we were expecting.
