Stopped in here to visit where a scene from the Tree of Life was filmed. It was cool to sit where Brad Pitt sat with his kids in the film. The staff was friendly and I enjoyed the experience.

I saw the reviews of this place being the best there is. We’ve lived here for a few years and decided tonight to try it out and I’m disappointed. Very much so. For a place that has such great reviews I don’t know where it went wrong but the chicken fried steak was mediocre at best, the color wasn’t even a golden brown, the gravy was greasy and nothing tasted like it was seasoned. My steak came out cooked wrong and had an odd copper taste to it and the potatoes felt like they were instant potatoes. The menu offered maybe 5 entrée options and the prices are too high for such a limited menu with food that was far from what others have said it was.
The only positive things I have to say about this visit was the green beans were on point. Those were amazing and the young woman working was polite and offered good service. Aside from the two things that were good, we won’t be back. Smithville offers a plethora of other dining choices, we’re just disappointed Back Door Cafe wasn’t what the reviews claimed it was.

Rob is an amazing talented chef! Well worth it! Amazing food, small business, family owned and operated, perfect for great fancy dinner with a beautiful lady or just pizza to go!

Google said this restaurant was open. We tried to go in the unlocked door and was greeted by a very hateful women, who stated, “We are not open”. That is fine. Put a closed sign in the window. Lock the door. Put accurate hours on Google. But, don’t be RUDE to repeat customers, or any customers! We will not come back. We went down the street to Blazer’s and had great meal. Smithville has enough great bars and restaurants, we don’t meed to patronize this business.

I’ve always enjoyed my meals at Back Door Cafe. My favorite is the quail. Rob and family have done amazing job for the past 28 years and Smithville and surrounding areas will miss them as well as the great food and service.

The best chicken fried chicken steak I’ve ever had served to me. The beans and salad bar are great as well. Good conversation and great people. Rob is gonna treat you right!

We were looking for a quick bite to eat on the way to Big Bend National Park (this is a long way from there, but we were headed down I-10). We drove by the place originally, since there was no sign, but made a quick turn around and stopped at the only place we saw that looked like a business. We asked the staff inside the store and they pointed us to the door in back. There is an actual back door to the place, hence the name and also the entrance most people used. This is what you might term a “hole in the wall”, but we loved the food and staff. Now, realize, this is not going to be salads and hummus…this is meat, fried potatoes and onion rings, and sweet tea and there ain’t nothing wrong with those things. The server was beyond great and helped us to some good ole’ Texas hospitality. They have a special every Saturday of the month, so you should definitely check this place out.

First & foremost!!! This place is NO longer the Back Door Cafe. Dont be fooled by signage. It has changed hands. Now it is Sudsworks. Prices are a joke. $12 for a brat hotdog that is a 6 to 1 in size. $14 for 2 6 oz pieces of battered cod.
