Shady Pricing Practices and Poor Management Overshadow Good Food ❌ ️

Our visit to Baazi NYC was a deeply frustrating experience that started with so much promise but ended in a total lack of trust. While the food was objectively good and our server was genuinely nice and kind, the evening was completely spoiled when the check arrived. We discovered significant overcharges: the Paneer Sabzi was billed at $22 despite being listed as $18 on both the menu and their website, and the Dal was charged at $20 instead of the advertised $13. When we inquired, the owner dismissively explained that their POS system had been updated even if the menus hadn’t. Rather than apologizing for the lack of transparency, he claimed their “regular” customers already knew about the price hikes, making us feel as though it was our mistake for even questioning the discrepancy. Screenshots and receipts attached for review.

The situation only worsened when it came time to rectify the bill. While the owner eventually offered to refund the cost of the dal and also waived off egg bhurji charges, the process was a logistical mess. They claimed to have voided the initial transaction and asked us to pay a new, adjusted amount, yet they couldn’t produce a void receipt for over half an hour. What should have been a pleasant dinner turned into a stressful ordeal due to these deceptive pricing tactics and the owner’s dismissive attitude. I honestly cannot recommend anyone visit this restaurant.

We walked into Baazi without reservations on Diwali, arguably one of the busiest nights of the year, and were welcomed into its small, intimate space. The atmosphere immediately felt special.

While the service was leisurely, it felt intentional—part of the experience rather than a flaw. It allowed us to savor the evening and the incredible meal that followed. The food was absolutely excellent, from start to finish.

We had:

ek aur baazi cauliflower
amritsari fish
chicken chandi tikka
lamb shank rogan josh
2 day dal makhani

Every dish was a standout. The lamb was fall-off-the-bone tender, the dal was rich and complex, and the appetizers set a perfect tone. It was a fantastic meal at a place that clearly values quality. We’ll definitely be back.

I went to Baazi with a friend of mine last night. We both got the New Delhi-style butter chicken and mango lassi while splitting garlic naan and rice. It was all delicious. The staff was so friendly and the service was incredibly quick! The ambiance of the restaurant is absolutely beautiful, it’s a small but elegant space and they played beautiful smooth jazz music. The food was all reasonably priced. I 10/10 recommend this place for Indian food on the Upper West Side!

We had 3 main dishes between the 2 of us – Malabari lobster tail, Lamb shank rogan josh, and G.O.A.T. Bihari – and they all had meat/fish of perfect texture with rich, spicy sauces that complimented w/o overwhelming the meat & all were all very different. It was a pleasure to keep making the round of them until they were gone. Friendly & really smart waiter (Pranith, I think), gentle ambience, and great service. I can’t recommend this place highly enough.

I went to this restaurant because google recommended us that is one of the best restaurants in NYC. Now I dont trust google.
Only reason I am giving it 2 star because food was okay. Following are the reasons I will never go to this restaurant again and I wont recommend this restaurant to anyone, except my enemies I guess.

• Despite having reservations, we were made to wait for 20 minutes outside on the sidewalk.
• Our table was already ready and just being cleaned after the previous guests meaning they don’t actually check or honor online reservations.
• People who came after us were seated and served before us.
• There was only one waiter working that night, and we literally had to call him over just to get our order taken.
• The waiter’s communication was so unclear that I had to guess what he was saying.
• The plates had stains, and the wine glasses had visible fingerprints. We were asked to use the same small appetizer plates for our entrées as well.
• Fruit flies were flying over our food.
• The chairs felt like torture devices round, unstable, and poking. Each one had two metal poles sticking right where your legs should rest, ensuring equal pain for both legs.
• The biggest disappointment: the restaurant looked nothing like the pictures online.

Overall, this was one of the most overrated places I’ve ever been to. The food might have been passable, but everything else was below basic standards. Definitely not worth the hype.

The food was excellent! Modern Indian cuisine with very good sauces and creative recipes. We loved every dish! The only negative point was the atmosphere in general, the played loud music that didn’t really fit with the atmosphere.

I’d heard great things about the food at Baazi. That’s not the issue. It’s worse. From my table, I could see a C grade health inspection posted in the kitchen. I don’t eat at places that don’t maintain an A grade, so this was alarming (we had already ordered). My friend looked up the grading at NYCEatSafe and it turns out Baazi had been cited for 35 violations in 2023, including rats. The Health.nyc.gov site currently lists the grading as a C. No grade is posted in their front window, a law in New York. Be aware of the health risks before eating here.

I recently dined at Baazi in New York and found the experience to be fairly average. The restaurant offers decent Indian food, but it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. While the presentation of the dishes was impressive, capturing a modern and stylish aesthetic, the flavors were somewhat lacking the authentic Indian kick that I was hoping for. The spices and depth of flavor that typically characterize Indian cuisine seemed muted, making the dishes taste rather bland. The ambiance and service were commendable, contributing to a pleasant dining environment. However, the overall culinary experience left something to be desired. I would rate my experience a 6/10.

Ambience was good and service was remarkable. The 2 day slow cooked Daal and the Banarasi tikki chaat were the highlights of our meal. The biryani was average, nothing authentic Hyderabadi about their Hyderabadi Biryani. The 65 wing could do with more seasoning and less ketchup. They need to improve on the softness of their Paneer.
