“A&W Root Beer’s got that frosty mug taste—sort of.”

We stopped by the A&W in Dubuque, IA after spotting the familiar orange and brown sign on our way home from a weekend trip. We wanted to see if it was as good as we remembered from childhood.

This A&W is located in a lovely historic building, but it shares the space with a gas station/convenience store, so the vibe is really disjointed. We weren’t sure which door to enter, you’ll find gas station coolers and displays right up to the counter, and there are two separate places to pay. That said, there are some fun vintage touches—like retro signage, an old jukebox (sadly not functional), and a classic diner-style counter.

We ordered a bacon double cheeseburger combo with fries and a root beer, onion rings, and an Impossible Swiss & Mushroom burger. The food took a little longer, but that was understandable with the special prep for the Impossible burger. The food itself was solid—typical fast food fare. The onion rings were especially good: crispy and flavorful.

One disappointment: no more frosty mugs. Drinks now come in standard plastic cups, which takes away that nostalgic charm. The upstairs seating area was a nice surprise, though, and made for a comfortable quick meal before hitting the road.

They weren’t busy, but our fries were initially missed in the order—staff fixed it quickly and apologized. The only real downside was the restroom floor, which could’ve used a better cleaning.

There are also some nice murals on nearby buildings that make for a pleasant photo stop.

Overall, it was an okay visit—not bad, not great. A little nostalgia, a little disappointment. Probably wouldn’t go out of my way to return, but I’m glad we stopped by for the memory.

Called to ask about price of coolant and quoted 10 dollars, came in saw price on shelf-$10… went to check out and it was $13 and cashier acted put out because I had boldness to complain… wanted to like this place… prices are wrong act put out to do a price check, complete waste of time. Hope they change

My food took a long time. They were friendly and apologetic but it took forever. I went upstairs to eat — otherwise you’re at a counter in the convenience store. It’s nice up there and has a really interesting view. The men’s bathroom wasn’t clean. All in all a mixed bag!

Restaurant is attached to a gas station. The staff were really friendly and the food came out quick. If you’re looking for something quick and easy, I’d recommend it but not great for large groups.

Great food and service…. Fast station vibes brought it down.. maybe if the upstairs seating was open would have been higher but I get it being closed during winter…

Must say the root beer here was a 10/10, Loved the root beer float. The coney chili dog was also good, probably the best food I ever had at a gas station, employees are also friendly and dedicated to their job

A&W in Dubuque used to be a good spot to grab a tasty burger, but now it’s kind of sketchy. The place looks dirty and gross, with floors covered in dirt and sticky stuff. The garbage cans are overflowing and there’s no room to throw anything away. I get that it can be tough to keep things clean when it’s busy, but when I went there, it was empty and the 5 staff members were just hanging out on their phones. It’s not a great look for a restauran

Food was hot and fresh. I really enjoyed my chicken and waffles. The only complaint is that I would have liked more than a small scoop of ice cream in a medium sized float.

Nice place for fast food

Short on time, so we stopped in for a quick lunch. The Cony Island Cheese Dog meal was good. Thought that the reuse of a historic building is a a great idea. There is a large eating area on the second floor.

Ample parking.

Handicap friendly on the first floor.

I tend not to post negative reviews but this was honestly the worst food and service we have had in a long time. Order was incorrect and food was not good. The root beer float and the fountain drink was the highlight. Onion rings tasted like old oil and wife’s chili dog did not taste good. My burger was incorrectly made after explaining what I wanted 3 times. Then it was slathered with ketchup after asking for no ketchup. Hope it was just an off day but not for us.
