Reviews
All the one star reviews are people who just don’t get how these small family style places operate. Be on time and bring the cash, and be very polite, like you’re visiting your Italian grandma, not eating at Il Mulino. If you love incredibly good Italian food and want that “home style” atmosphere and cooking (and don’t mind putting on a couple pounds) this is the place. Definitely worth the trip from Manhattan.
* When I sat down, I opened my purse to apply chapstick. As I am doing this, the bartender Diane rudely said “put your bag on the hook”. (As it is open and I am clearly trying to find something in it) I obliged and then when I set my phone on the bar in front of me she told me to put my phone in my bag and get it off the bar(?)
* My friend asked Diane if there was a Pear Martini, as she’s had it before. Diane snarkily responded “there is no pear Martini, there is a pear gin and tonic. I would know since I am the one to make the drinks, there is no pear martini.” The waitress Sharon interrupted kindly and said “The pear martini is famous here definitely get it”.
* My friend ordered said martini and I said I was going to wait to order a drink because I wanted to try hers and Diane under her breath said “well I’m not making another”
* She ripped away my friends plate mid bruschetta.
* When another couple was about to sit down, the bar wasn’t cleaned in front of the quite yet and she told the girl that (fair!) and then said “Don’t you dare sit down” to the girl in a very aggressive tone
* When I told Diane that the pear martini she made was amazing and I loved it she said “I’m so sick of the word amazing it’s so overplayed I’m sick of it people need to come up with a different word”
* She rushed clearing our app plates and entree plates. Then took forever to get our bill, I didn’t even get the chance to ask and I was texting on my phone and she said in a very aggressive tone “I SEE YOU”. And then continued to ignore us for a good while.
I’d like to note, everything she said was in an extremely rude tone which was confusing because we were very kind back the entire time. There were many other rude comments made to us but we decided killing her with kindness was the best way to deal with it. We still tipped over 25% because the food was good and it’s the holiday season.
I will not be returning however and will be telling everyone who asks about this place about my experience. So while the food is good, the way you will be treated is not worth it.
After I suggested Thursday or Friday—while clarifying that weekdays were also fine since we live nearby—she flipped through the reservation book abruptly and stated those days were unavailable. When I again asked if she could tell me the next open slot, she simply repeated, “I need a day or date,” in an unhelpful and dismissive tone.
No matter how great the food may be, an experience begins with hospitality, and the lack of courtesy at the reservation stage left a lasting negative impression. It’s disappointing that such an acclaimed restaurant allows such unprofessional service at the very first point of contact.
APRIL 2022: Chicken Francheise always 10/10 (on the lemony side) – I can’t stop ordering it! As well as FRESHLY filled cannolis and ice box cake (home made). Get the pork chop (huge servings! You only need half serving unless you’re splitting for a table of four). Sharon (owner) 10/10 hosting experience. Big birthday in May wish her happy birthday!
MAR 2022: Always a fan of their dessert menu, whatever is fresh. Ice box cake 2nd time was awesome as well as Tartufa ice cream. The rack of lamb was delicious and tender! No sauce on the side. The linguini with clams (white sauce) had a great oil base sauce not too heavy on the butter side.
MAR 2022: Another 10/10 experience. Chicken francese was the perfect amount of Lemon/White wine. Gnocchi Bolognese had a perfect tomato sauce without being too heavy of a beef flavor. Really great Tito’s Extra Dirty Martini. Sharon and Victoria treated my mom (Sara) and I with great service!
NOV 2021: Homemade sauce, breaded pork chop was top notch. We’ve been there a second time and the chicken parm and francese was to die for. Also freshly filled cannolis are great. 10/10 both times we’ve been there.
