When I walked into the restaurant, there was a family of 4 (2 adults/2kids) sitting in a dining area that has a mix of tables that can seat groups of up to 2 and 4 people. The woman who took my order greeted me and asked if it was my first time there. I told her yes and how I found them, and she said I made the right choice instead of going elsewhere. She was absolutely right! A watch out for me when eating at restaurants that have food from other cultures is if people from that culture are eating there, too. When you have Jamaicans eating at a Jamaican spot, you know it’s good.
So glad I found Angie’s and I’ll definitely be back!
Edit:
We came back for seconds today. Truly, this food is exceptional. The jerk pork with collard greens is 5 stars.
Edit: ok I am back for thirds!!! Delicious
I work in the vicinity and decided to return to Angie’s because the owner (a lady) was gracious towards me the other day when I left school.
Background: I take four buses to get to work and back. When I arrived this day, this was after I went to two classes beginning at 8am, took two buses to get to Durham, then waited for over an hour because the #7 Bus was involved in an accident. I was to be at work at 1pm but, my management team allowed me to take lunch coming into the office.. making my “return from lunch 1:30pm”.
I placed my order on the kiosk and noticed there is not an option for a veggie plate. I asked a young lady (girl) with a pinkish bonnett and several hairnets on, “Do you all sell veggie plates?” She explained to me that under ‘Vegan Options’ is the Curry Chickpeas, and I responded, “Thank you but no thank you.. I was am looking for a standard veggie plate — like rice and two or three sides”. She informed me to order from the side items menu.
I placed my order at 1:09p.
I went to the bathroom, changed from my bus clothes to regular clothes (because buses are germy) and sat near the counter.
I watched so many people come and go, but no one called my number — 62.
I asked, “How long for 62?” They (the girl and another soft spoken guy) responded, “A few minutes.”
20 minutes pass, and my supervisor is checking to see where I am. I told her that I placed my order at 1:09 and that it still isn’t ready.
The bonnett lady is chopping chicken and I asked the soft-spoken guy, “What is taking 62 so long?” He responded, “We needed plantains. Ten minutes”.
I began get very irritated from that point forward because if the restaurant (BOH) was unaware that they were missing an item and/or needed to prepare it, that should have been communicated to the FOH so they can relay that to the guests/customers.
The time is now 1:39p and there is another guy (red, yellow, green beanie/toboggan on) and from understanding, he is the ‘boss’?
I go to him and tell him, “I have been waiting for almost 40 min for my food. What is taking so long? I need to be at work”. He tells me, “Ma’am, I just got here so I don’t know”.
That not only is an insufficient answer, that is not what a shift lead or a manager is to tell a waiting customer. The correct answer is: “Ma’am, I just got in but, hold on — let me check”, or something along the lines of, “Allow me a moment to find the resolution and/or answer”.
Answer: They needed to make everything I ordered and failed to communicate with me that there would be a wait on certain items. They did not apologize nor offer a drink or something as a way to make up for time. Though they handled the overall business well, they did not handle my business well.
Also, apparently – there was a woman in the store who knows/knew the family very well and swore I was rude. When in truth, I was not (check the cameras). As paying customer and someone in leadership, I told the guy in the beenie, “If you are going to wear the logo, wear it proudly”, meaning — make sure that the quality in food matches your quality in service.
In closing, they plated my food separately, even though I asked for it in one box. On the kiosk, I typed “Veggie Plate” under each the items I wanted in one box and asked for the plantains separately. I got back to my desk and thoroughly enjoyed my mac, rice-n-peas, and steamed cabbage. The plantains were oily and the yams tasted acidic (like it either had too much lemon zest or lemon juice).
Overall, I am unsure if I will return .. because I love plantains and spinach patties, and sometimes, I literally crave that combination specifically. But, at this moment, I will not be. I was not impressed by the service, was highly offended at the fact that no one had communicated with me that my food would take 45+ min to make and plate rather than letting me know up-front, and the lack of leadership is beyond my threshold.
I received my order at 1:49p.
…anywhere! It was perfectly cooked …. very tender and tasty. The cabbage was cut differently, but so delicious.! Hubby had the Curry Goat….and said it was amazing!! My only regret is that we don’t live closer, but I feel sure we will return when we are able. Thank you Angies!!!
I came here excited to try this place and everything went downhill fast. I ordered curry chicken with rice and peas and collard greens. After I paid and sat there waiting, I was told they were out of collard greens and needed to substitute it. Fine.
Then, after waiting again, I was called back up only to be told they didn’t have enough curry chicken. Why am I being charged for food you don’t even have? That should have been communicated before taking my money. I was told there was only one piece left and asked what I wanted to add to make the plate full. I requested curry goat and the guy immediately told me no he couldn’t do that.
So why ask me what I wanted if my options were already decided for me? On top of that, the attitude from the staff made the situation even more frustrating.
Now let’s talk about the food because wow.
The curry chicken smelled horrible like reused old chicken that had been sitting for days. I was honestly scared to eat it. The jerk chicken was dry, burnt, and had absolutely no flavor. Nothing about it was jerk.
The rice and peas were undercooked. The rice was hard and the peas were hard to chew. I also requested extra gravy, which they specifically ask you about, and still didn’t get it, so what was the point of asking?
This was not authentic Jamaican food. It felt like people trying to make food they haven’t mastered. The entire experience was unorganized, unprofessional, and disappointing. Between the poor customer service and the terrible food quality, I will not be returning.
Save your money.
