I finally made the 40+ minute drive to Alpha Gyro in Harvey, IL after repeatedly hearing about their famous “Gym Shoe.” This hoagie comes loaded with roast beef, corned beef, gyro meat, lettuce, onion, cheese, mayo, all served on a soft French/hoagie-style bread, and you can order it hot or cold. Online- the meats are finely chopped so everything blends together smoothly in each bite. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case here. The meat was cut into much larger pieces, and as shown in the image I posted, the gyro meat was the most prominent, which ended up overpowering the corned beef and roast beef. While the sandwich was still flavorful and filling, the size of the meat pieces took away from the balance I was expecting.
The customer service was good, and the restaurant smelled clean and appeared well maintained. The location was bright and welcoming, which made it feel safe and comfortable for someone coming in from out of town. Parking was convenient, and I was able to park directly in front of the establishment. Although the Gym Shoe didn’t fully meet my expectations, I would return to try the Super Taco on a pita for $7.99, which several people were praising while I was there. Alpha Gyro is still worth checking out if you’re curious about a local favorite.

Food is always good..Prices have gone up quite a bit but hey, everything has gotten higher these days. My favorite are the rib tips and don’t forget to pay a lil extra to replace the regular fries with garlic fries
