Once you walk inside, it’s like being gently teleported to the islands. J Boog was playing, the vibe was warm and friendly, and every inch of the place was decorated like someone said, “Yes, all the island things. Put them everywhere.”
We ordered the lau lau, a Hawaiian Sun (obviously), and a Kaula bowl. The food came out lightning fast—like suspiciously fast—and overall it was really good.
I say really good with a tiny asterisk, because I take my lau lau very seriously and order it everywhere. This one came in a soup bowl, had quite a bit of liquid, and a strong liquid smoke flavor that caught me a little off guard. Not bad, just not my favorite lau lau journey.
Everything else, though? Solid. And bonus points: we ended up chatting with the table next to us, who generously shared their macadamia pancakes. Life-changing. Lightly crisp on the outside and drenched in a magical “secret sauce” that tasted like a glorious love child of frosting and syrup.
We are absolutely coming back—for those pancakes alone.
This stack did NOT disappoint! The cream on top is like that of a French cream pastry puff, only much thicker. Not very sweet, but just sweet enough. The Macadamia nut pieces added a wonderful fragrance and texture too. Its very thick and a good portion-I didn’t need to ask for extra!
The stacks themselves were VERY fluffy and had a chewy, mochi-like consistency and flavor. Very delicious indeed! My wife got the charshu beef and pork loco moco plate which was also VERY yummy. Tasty gravy and great portions for both (prices are fair too).
The place is small, but there is outdoor seating for large parties. The interior is a pot-luck of decorations and there is a laminated picture menu up front. This is a homegrown business that is rough around the edges. But if you like great, unique pancakes, this joint is a must hit!
The Macadamia Nut Pancakes are a must-try. Even though we ordered the small size, it was still a lot.
The Spam Musubi has a nice mix of saltiness from the Spam and sweetness from the soy sauce.
For the Breakfast Plate (2 entrées), we picked shrimp, beef, and eggs. The taste was a bit too sweet for my wife, and zero vegetables on the plate weren’t my favorite, only rice and meats.
The staff are nice. Definitely worth trying!
The location is small, but they made it work. My group of 5 ate outside.
I preferred the loco moco vs the macadamia nut pancakes. Although the pancakes were plentiful, the “secret cream sauce” was bland, the pancakes were over cooked, edges burnt, and the macadamia nuts were stale.
Things happen, and it’s not going to deter me from giving them another shot. Could be someone’s bad day.
I’ll go back and give them another try the next time I’m in California.
This is an independently owned Hawaiian place with a menu that’s bigger than your standard Hawaiian BBQ joint. You’ll find all the classics like rice plates, veggies, mac salad, chicken katsu, pork and beef teriyaki, but they also have more options than most similar spots.
I went with the two-item plate and chose chicken katsu and a pork dish the server recommended. I asked about swapping rice for double mac salad, but there’s a $1.50 upcharge, so I went with double veggies instead. The total came out to just over $20.
Takeout took about 20 minutes, which was reasonable considering how busy they were. When I picked up the plate, I expected it to feel a little heavier for the price. It wasn’t light, but it wasn’t as filling as I thought it would be.
Once home, the food looked good. The veggies were the standout. Fresh, not overcooked, and generous since I ordered double. The mac salad tasted good but was on the small side. For a Hawaiian place, I could’ve easily used more.
The pork dish was flavorful and moist and paired well with the sauce they provided. The sauce tasted like a house-made teriyaki style and was actually one of the best parts of the meal. The chicken katsu, unfortunately, was a bit dry and smaller than expected. A couple more pieces would’ve made a big difference.
Overall, the food was decent, but the portions, especially the protein, felt a little light for a $20+ plate. I was hungry going in and could finish it easily, but I wasn’t stuffed.
Service was great, the staff was friendly, and parking was easy even with how busy it was. I also noticed some other dishes around the room that looked better than what I ordered, so I’d definitely try something different next time, possibly dining in instead of takeout.
For now, I’d give it three stars. Good flavors, good people, and solid Hawaiian comfort food. I just wish the portions were a bit more generous for the price.
Absolutely delicious and the small is a great size for 2-3 people. Shaved ice is also yummy but the sugar free had almost no flavor. Service has always been great but the restaurant is pretty small and can get super busy.
The food was a letdown, starting with the Kalua pork, which was so salty it was hard to enjoy. The pancakes were the worst part of the order, and the macaroni salad didn’t have much flavor. It seems the macadamia nuts might have been old and stale, too.
But the worst part was the service. From the moment you walked in, the cashier with glasses was pushy and rude. Even after I mentioned it was out first time there, she continued to rush us. The other young lady with orange hair kept repeating that there was no teriyaki sauce, which was confusing and unnecessary. When the food arrived in to-go boxes even though my receipt said it was for “here,” the same cashier was apathetic and didn’t seem to care.
Unfortunately, this experience was frustrating and disappointing, especially when you’re looking to enjoy a taste of the islands. With so many other local spots that offer better food and service, it’s hard to imagine giving this place a second chance.
