Mounsif Ghninou, owner of Al Dente’s, started his culinary journey in 1990, working in Boston’s North End as a Chef in an authentic Italian restaurant what is today known as Trattoria II Panino in Boston’s famous Italian section known as The North End on Hanover Street. Then, opening his own restaurant as Executive Chef at Cafe Mediterraneo in Portsmouth, NH since 1993!! Combining the Italian flavors from New York and New Jersey with Chef Jason makes a great traditional Italian flare.

In my experiences, Italian restaurants are a dime a dozen. But once in a while, you find that diamond in the rough and this place IS IT! From the moment we walked in to paying the bill, the staff was phenomenal. They were friendly, accommodating, informative, suggestive, and it was an all around fantastic experience.
I had the Gnocchi with pink sauce and added blackened chicken. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and grilled. The gnocchi was sooo good. The Seafood Rissotto was amazing – just the right amount of sauces and flavors to not be overdone but full, complete, and complementary.
The drinks were amazing, especially the pistachio martini. Some of the best calamari I’ve eaten – lightly breaded and fried, not rubbery or chewy. And the bruschetta was also great, including the presentation.
Overall, top notch experience, mouthwatering food, and absolutely wonderful service.

A group of friends met for lunch at Al Dente’s. From the moment we entered we felt welcomed. Our waiter was friendly and patient. The food was the best I’ve had in years! The bread tasted homemade and fresh. Everyone loved their meals! Highly recommend this restaurant!

I made a reservation ahead of time and mentioned that we had a special event, my wife’s birthday. We were seated promptly and it seemed that they were just winding down from happy hour and the early dinner rush. The table seating was a bit awkward or crammed but we made due. We were handed off between people and asked several times for a kids menu only to find out they did not have one? Our waitress let us know verbally what was available for the 6 year old. There was some confusion as to which wines could be sampled. We ordered some wine samples and blackened fish bites for an appetizer. The fish bites and the sauce were great, very tasty. We then ordered our food and this is where our evening shined. I think that each of us were only able to eat half of our dishes due to the generous portions. I had beef medallions over pasta and might I say they were done wonderfully. The food is amazing. Even the spaghetti with a meatball for our 6 year old grandson was great! We will definitely go back again, perhaps at a different time. The other bummer was although I included the special occasion on my reservation, no mention was made of it while we were there. I did not ask about it and we just pressed on. The food is worth the trip.

Nice quiet atmosphere, the service was good, the lady was attentive and super friendly. The food was good, let me tell you, the Caesar salad lacked dressing big time, and the chicken francese was soupy – though the flavor was there, it was too much liquid. The bread was spot on 🙂

We have been to Al Dente’s since they were open, We do understand that now restaurants are hard business, that’s why when they reduce amount of appetizers we didn’t complain.But today we had lunch again and were absolutely shocked to find a metal nail inside our calamari. Yes—a nail. When we brought it to the manager’s attention, he casually replied, and what he said is shocked me “It’s also protein.” While he is busy on his cell phone ! That response was not only disrespectful, but also dangerously irresponsible. This is a serious food safety issue that could have caused real harm.
We expected an apology or at least concern, but instead we were dismissed. Absolutely unacceptable. We won’t be returning—and we sincerely hope others are careful when dining here.

A Queens Oasis
I took my son to Al Dente’s for his birthday. This is our second time eating here. The outside makes it seem small; however, once you walk in you realize it is quite large. They have a full bar where you can sit and order food and drinks. They also have the bar style sitting tables in this area. In the back part is the traditional style sitting area. They have a large selection of wines and full bar drinks. The food menu is delectable. The noise level is low enough to hold a conversation with those at your table, but high enough to not be able to hear conversations at other tables.
The wait staff and bartender are awesome. Since tips are shared across the board, everyone tends to check on you. They do not go get your waiter to complete a task. They do it themselves.
My son ordered a chocolate cake for dessert and they brought it out with a candle and sang Happy Birthday to him. I did not ask for it to be done. I had mentioned before the beginning of our order that this is the place he chose to have his birthday lunch at. Their added touch of singing and celebrating with us definitely has made me a patron for life. I absolutely love the food, wine, and mostly the staff here.

Al Dente’s consistently has great food and amazing service. Owners are wonderful people who are committed to their customers and community. Christine (co-owner) helped my family plan a memorial repast on very short notice even while she was out of town on vacation and was flexible on all of our arrangements. The event turned out really nice and everyone loved the food. So grateful to have a restaurant like this in the area.

We had reservations for 5:30pm on a Monday night for 4 people (2 adults and 2 children). We arrived 10 minutes early and were seated immediately as the restaurant was not busy. Our orders were taken by 5:30. Everything seemed to be going great. After waiting an hour and still not having our food I asked our waitress why our food was taking so long. She said the food would be right out. I waited another 10 minutes and informed the waitress that we would be leaving if our food wasn’t out in 5 minutes. We watched two other tables get seated after we ordered our food, both of which received their food while we continued to wait. The waitress then said our food would be out in 7 minutes. After waiting another 8 minutes, and still not receiving our food, I requested our check for our appetizers and informed her we would be leaving. She brought us our check and we paid for our 2 appetizers and left. Never did she provide any apology or explanation for why our food was taking so long. Needless to say, we won’t be back.

We had a very good dinner at the restaurant. It was extremely busy and the young man at the front door did an amazing job handling all their guests and getting them seated. He was the highlight of our evening, which was all around very very good. I highly recommend the restaurant but also highly recommend reservations if you go on a weekend. We sat in the bar in the waiter was very nice and helpful and we enjoyed the atmosphere.
