Shoyu was my favorite, deeply layered flavors, broth was just incredible, good noodles, chashu and egg.
Aburasoba and the August special of cumin lamb were both also amazing. Soba was a comforting, home-y, savory flavor. Cumin lamb tasted exactly like the skewer carts.
Miso was good but not my favorite. Tantanmen was my least favorite but if you want something creamy and spicy this is the one for you!
Overall, incredible ramen restaurant and this is the type of ramen I want to make one day. Highly recommend.
overall a very solid bowl. would love to try their signature miso next time.
We got both of the rice bowls to share, the Ikura bowl with salmon roe was a thing I would eat all the time if I could! The Chashu bowl was also delicious, the chashu was tender and perfectly seasoned.
We then all got the miso ramen, which was just delightful. The broth was complex and full of umami, and the noodles were perfectly chewy! It’s definitely worth adding the egg into your ramen. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for really high quality ingredients and homemade soup and noodles in their ramen!
As good as it all was, for me the star of the show was staple that named the shop “Akahoshi Miso”. So flavor packed, rich but balanced, noodles had a great texture. The pork chashu is both a slice of fatty belly, along with a thin slice of pork to give you both experiences. Egg (ajitama) is a perfect jammy texture, well marinated, and you can tell they’re using a good quality. I think you have to add the ajitama, so don’t forget it!
Either way, whatever you get you won’t be disappointed.
The service was great, my server was awesome, the owner is a master of his craft and all around great dude.
There are walk-ins, but I would recommend just scheduling a reservation. It’s worth the wait. But if you’re in the Logan Square area and are able to walk in day of, then great! If you want Japanese ramen that is on the same level as Japan, come here for sure.
I found out about this store through Instagram.
I had to wait seventy five minutes.
But I got foods in tem minutes after I ordered.
I ordered a Chashu Rice and a Akaboshi Miso Ramen.
Chashu was very very tasty and Ramen was hot.
The staffs were very nice, kind and helpful.
This Ramen store was very good.
But I had a hard time finding a parkina spot.
I tried this time the November Special, and really loved it, how also rich but lighter broth it was and perfect cooked noodles, I asked for 2 eggs because they are amazing!
Akahoshi Ramen is one of those much-hyped spots where the buzz almost guarantees a touch of disappointment. With wait times reportedly stretching 4–5 weeks, expectations are naturally sky-high — perhaps unrealistically so.
The menu is quite limited for such a celebrated ramen shop: only two traditional-style options, Miso (which I personally don’t enjoy) and Shoyu, notably missing my favorite — Tonkotsu. They also feature two “soupless” ramens (still not entirely sure what that means) and a monthly special priced at $24. I went for the special, which had a flavorful broth and tender meat, but I wasn’t a fan of the homemade noodles — their texture just didn’t work for me. It was good overall, but not *$24 good*.
We also tried the **Midwest Shoyu — “Modernity meets origins.”** It’s described as a clear chicken soup with soy sauce, katsuobushi, sababushi, and straight thin noodles made from Midwest wheat, topped with green onions, nori, menma bamboo shoots, pork chashu, and shio koji chicken breast. In this one, I actually liked the noodles a lot, but the broth had a strange, off-putting flavor that didn’t quite land.
The biggest surprise? Their ramen doesn’t automatically come with an egg — an essential element, in my opinion — and it costs extra.
All in all, Akahoshi Ramen serves up a decent bowl, but between the hype, the wait, and the pricing, it falls short of being the culinary revelation it’s made out to be. A fine ramen experience, just not one worth lining up weeks for.
As loyal monthly customers, we expect basic professional courtesy, not to be treated like we’re begging for a favor. No matter how good the food is or even if it’s free, we won’t be returning. Distasteful. This is NOT how you treat patrons that consistently support your business.
Our waiter (who was wearing a very cool Stan Mikita jersey) quickly welcomed us soon as we sat down. He also didn’t waste any time in telling us that they only had one special available. I was glad he told us as I had been told to order whatever the special was. That said, I would have been disappointed to find out that they were all out of specials by 8:15.
I ordered the special and my wife ordered the Soupless Tantanmen and we shared the Chashu Rice Bowl side. The food came out very quickly (maybe too quickly) and everything was excellent – I could easily tell that there was thought and care put into each ingredient (even the bamboo shoots had a distinctive taste and quality that distinguished them from the bland stuff you get at a typical ramen shop). I would just note for others that the Soupless Tantanmen is pretty spicy. I’d say we ordered the right amount of food as we left satisfied and with a modest container of leftovers.
All in all, Akahoshi did not disappoint and I’m looking forward to going back soon!
Super late review, went this year around May- June when they had their Kitakata ramen monthly special, loved the monthly special and ikura rice bowl! The other ramen me and my friends got was on the heavier side and it wasn’t my favorite
