Open @ 11am?? Funny. Its almost 10 after and doors are still locked. Not a very good first impression for a new restaurant. May want to actually have your doors open when you are supposed to.

Always have liked Ajo Al’s at 16th/Camelback, and used to eat there almost weekly in the late 90s and early 2000s. The Mesa/Gilbert food was as good, but deffinatly like the old Mexico atmosphere in Phoenix better. The Mesa booths were a bit tight for us taller folks, and those with a few extra pounds, request a table instead. The other downside was the window next to us had multiple flies, not appetizing. Maybe window coverings of some sort may help? Service was good, not outstanding. Avoid tables near restrooms as some seats will look directly, at an angle, at doors to W/M. We were there at lunch, and parking was tight, sure it may be harder in the evening. Wish them success.

This was our first time trying Ajo Al’s, and we are so glad that they opened up in our neighborhood! Food was delicious, rice and beans were good, salsa was tasty, and the house margaritas are pretty decent!

As a longtime fan of Ajo Al’s (especially the Biltmore and Arrowhead locations), I was really excited for the new Gilbert spot—especially since I helped supply materials during its construction. Unfortunately, my first visit was disappointing and fell short of the consistent quality I’ve come to expect.
Key issues:
Complimentary bean dip was missing; the $9 side we ordered had a dry, muddy texture and had to be sent back (though the beans with our entrées were fine).
My wife’s flauta combo had very little sour cream.
My #1 taco combo arrived only lukewarm instead of piping hot.
The open cheese crisp with jalapeños had raw peppers simply tossed on top instead of properly baked in.
While I understand it’s a brand-new location with growing pains and our server was still learning, the food quality and execution didn’t match the Biltmore standard—especially for the price. I’m hopeful they’ll improve kitchen standards soon and would love to give them another chance once they’ve had time to work out the kinks.

They are not serving freshly made tortillas which was the main reason I came in. The calabacitas were way overcooked and the steak picado was chewy and diced in tiny pieces. This location just opened and will try again see if they improved.

Great experience here in their first week of being open. I’ve been to many new restaurants early on and I was expecting some forgivable hiccups but there were none. Great to have another nice mexican place in the area. We will be back!
